Samples or vst for drums

Post by upadeg » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:21 pm

Just wondering what you guys use for drums. Do you buy sample packs and use individual drum samples or use vst plugins?
The reason i ask is because the drum samples that come with fl are wank so i was looking for a push in the right direction.

samples all the way. The default fl ones are pretty bad though. Best bet is to search this forum and google for free packs and hits or invest in a couple of decent packs. The vengenae packs are very popular.

Check some computer music back issues and you will find a shit load of sample packs. Some are better than others though =)

samples are better simply because working in a sampler provides much more versatility than working with a drumsynth. you can always use a drumsynth to create your own unique samples though.

Battery 3 comes with something like 30,000 drum samples, most of which are excellent. And you get a drum sampler too, so maybe give that a go!

Have just tried out Tattoo by Audio Damage, a sequencing drum synth. Not very powerful, but really quick and dirty for making beats.

I do both, samples and drum synths (or just synths to make the drum sounds). Some times I do all samples, sometimes, all synth, and sometimes mix the two.

I've, and many others that have been doing this for a while, have amassed pretty heft sample collections from god knows where. Finding good samples is all just part of being a producer. So is finding how you like to work, and what kind of sounds you like.

Little of each, not ness. a drum synth though, most synths will give you some killer drums sounds if you know how too use them...

I make alot of drums from wierd shit i sample with my mic n PALM.... Hammers hitting anything metal, particularly nails n trash bins, make good snares, expecially when you layer them with some noise burst and a WEE bit of square n saw waves... Audacity tends to be particularly useful in this n its the only reason its still on my pc, you cant beat it for putting attack n decay onto your own waveforms... you can get some good hats from forks on glass and more white noise bursts... kicks... well... kick something... put sine n saw under it...

I was talking about using 3xOSC to get un-lfoed tones n then piling in waveshpe n bitcrush, boucing about 3 seconds of it down, n then pinching it up in audacity too make custom drums...

BTW, found out last night, if you leaf through a book real fast, n record the 'FRAAAP' it makes, pitch a bit, give it a looong ass attack n a very short decay, they make for an awesome 'step' feel if you put em right before your snares... dont quantize it, just stick it so the end of the sample touches the attack fade on the snare...

I might be wierd, but Ive still never found many samples to use as drumsin drum packs... I end up doing more searching in industrial sound packs and shit...

Get creative. Thier only sounds. No rules in drums, period...

Samples dude. I use FL as well, and the samples in it can be wank solo ( can be great when filtered and layered though ).

I spent about a tenner on Prime Loops and got about 600 one shots for my money. Nice and clean too.

It's well worth it just for the clarity of sound and such.

A good search of the net will also get you hundreds of hits for free.

i sample bits of breaks most of the time and process them to make my own new samples. occasionally use 1 shots, and very occasionally synth some beats, not often though. depends on the kind of sound i want.

normally all my beats are done in kontakt

Firstly big up to Basic A for 'hitting the nail on the head' (sorry, couldn't resist) and offering some wicked tips there man.

Anything can be made into a drum hit. To this end, and in answer to your question, it has to be samples all the way. Although Battery has an excellent library installed, every copy of Battery has that library installed. Who else has the sample where you hit the cat with the mallet?

I guess it depends what you are trying to achieve, but I am beginning to realise that thinking outside of the box when it comes to sounds, either with sound source or heavy processing of 'normal' drum samples brings a uniqueness to your beats.

Personally I arrange all my hit in Cubase individually, no sampler, no VST. It's a little more long winded but I feel like I have more control. I do however use drum machines at college and I enjoy using them. I just find with audio I can see everything in front of me, I dunno I guess that's just my workflow.
