New Tape Op article - DIY reverb

Post by __________ » Sat Apr 17, 2010 3:08 pm

Anyone else checked the new Tape Op out? There's a two page article on building your own spring/plate 'verb from a slinky, and old speaker, a piezo transducer and a bit of soldering.

I'll scan/photo the article soon for everyone who doesn't subscribe to the magazine, but is anyone else thinking about building one?
I've been looking for a simple electronics project to do, and am going to attempt this along with a dub siren some time!

:D

Yeah, I referred someone in another thread to it too - there's some cool links & Youtube videos for DIY 'verbs if you just go there too... aw, fuck it. I'll repost 'em here.

I totally wanna try the slinky reverb in that article!

If you make it all from scratch about £7. You probably have most of the stuff lying around the house. I can't find anywhere to buy a Rolen-star audio transducer for the plate reverb

I have made a Plate verb, and its pretty nice, I will make another one with a nicer metal, and better pickups.

DIY gear is the best. I recently came across an old tube mic pre that had been discontinued, replaced the tube and the pots and actually got a nice (although very colorful) mic pre thats great for beefing up basslines, even good for moderate amounts of tube compression.

What speaker did you use? Did you build your own?

FYI, on the tactile transducer tip - here's a comparison of the various models, Rolen-Star included:

http://www.baudline.com/erik/bass/tactile_report.html

Some cheap, well-rated tactile transducers:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=309-148

And from the same site, the whole selection of tac. transducers:

http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/se ... D=28135408

Edit:

So it seems the Rolen-Stars aren't for sale to the general public, so if you were to score one it'd likely be from a contracting job where someone had 'em and was getting rid of them for newer, better models. But there's enough other options on the parts-express link above that it shouldn't matter.
