BIO
Taken from TWU-Agency

Based in London, UK.
Soul Sinners are a production trio formed in 2007, over a mutual love of all things bass heavy. The trio were originally producing drum and bass, house, hip hop and reggae then decided to try their hand at dubstep production. Their first fruits were in a track entitled, 'Dis World' and from then on; there was no looking back.

With huge tracks signed to Dubstar Records, Dubting and Dub Steppers and a whole host of tracks and releases on the way including forthcoming music on Dubsaw, Gangsta Boogie, Dubstar, Southside Dubstars, Bullfrog and more it’s no wonder the Soul Sinners sound has been picked up and supported by the heavy weights of the scene including; N-Type, Kromestar, F-One, Hatcha, Heny G, Cluekid, Mind, Luke Envoy, Reso and many more while also featuring on radio shows including Rinse FM, Flex FM, Your Time Radio, Cyba FM and more.

Soul Sinners have achieved a very versatile sound in a short space of time. Whether it's banging out a set of pure filth or keeping the vibe mellow and bubbly, these guys always rock shows and consistently have crowds calling out for more. Exceptional DJ’s having spent years behind the decks the trio mould together to create an outstanding DJ set, holding down a prime time radio slot on Flex FM and having been requested for guest mixes on a number of other shows, Soul Sinners have also been snapped up and sponsored by THTC Clothing company, cementing their demand and assurance of quality.

Destined for big things, 2010 looks to be a big year for Soul Sinners with tracks coming on reggae legend Peter Bouncers new album and a debut LP on the Dubstar imprint as well as a material on a number of high quality labels and with a box full of amazing unsigned tunes the sky is the limit. Soul Sinners are making a big impact on the scene and will do the same at your event.

This Session is OPEN FOR QUESTIONS.
This thread will run slightly different, compile questions and post them back.
It's up to the producer if they will continue answering questions. So don't make silly faces if your question is left unanswered.

Am interested to know how you approach a track with their being 3 of you and has it changed much from when you started working together i.e have you separate roles now you know each others strengths/weakness'. Cheers.

How do all three of you work together? Is it multiple computers or do you all just run a train on one comp? And thanks for doing this it's much appreciated.

Ez,

We do not have a 'set way' of working which is what allows us to do varied musical styles and keep everything sounding fresh (at least to our ears)

Normally, if we are all in the studio together you have to fight to get on the controls... we will just make a groove and add to it until we feel we have enough ideas to form a skeleton arrangment... This normally takes a few hours if we are all in the zone and we will often find that the person on the controls is just taking orders from whoever is sitting on the PS3 or Xbox...
Its a very relaxed environmet to work in and it allows us to not have to get bogged down with having to listen intently for ages to the same loop, you can wander in and out, maybe get the dinner on the go or get the beers in... we think its the best way to work as sometimes arguments can arise and it all gets a bit too much... its more productive to let people get their own way and then just change what you want to while the other person aint looking cos sometimes its alot harder to vocalise an idea than it is to just show someone what you are talking about...

Alot of the tracks we have released are down to Mike and he makes at least 50% of the output all on his own as he is the one who has the time on his hands... we all agree that the stuff we make together is some of the best tracks we have done to date because it is always a good idea to have someone to bounce ideas off, especially if you respect that persons opinion... and I think that is what makes working together so enjoyable, we have all been friends for a long time and we just have a sit down and make beats... its always been like that and we help each other with tricks and tips all the time and we truely beleive that as long as we are all on the same page the track will come together nicely...

As for set ups go, its all computer based... Mike uses mac and logic while Ben and I use PC and Steinberg (Cubase or Nuendo)
we have all had alot of experience in using a whole host of different programs and seriously do not think that any of that matters... its all about what comes out at the end thats important and anyone who tells you different doesn't really grasp the idea of music... obviously there are some sequencers that are better than others but realistically, the best tracks are the ones that make you move... and that doesn't come from what program you are using.....

Hope this helps...

Alf

First of all big ups! Love you guys and the whole dubstar fam.

My question is how do you get that feet moving shuffle in your hats? Any secrets? ^^
This one the things that make the dubstars stand out for me.

Also what vst do you prefer for making your basses?

Peace

Ez, cheers for the props...
the easiest way to get the ryhthm track you want is to play the ryhthm in on the keyboard and just edit it in the matrix editor... check youtube for tutorials... Basslines are always a hard thing to get right... we use a whole host of different synths and no 'one' vst stands out more than the rest... our advice is to just keep trying to get the sound you want, then worry about the modulation and effects after... the better a sound is when its dry the better it will be with fx and modulation...
We are no longer Dubstar crew... we will have a label of our own coming by the end of the year and will have a load of releases on other labels in the mean time...
Keep it Soul Sinners....
PEACE.
