Compression, "sidechaining(?)" & synths

can anyone give me a rundown of how to make the synth cut out and fade back in like that everytime there's a kick?
it's a cool effect... I saw Distance in Vancouver recently and I hear this track where the same effect was applied but with a kick with really long sustain (I think a vintage 808 type of thing) and pretty much the rest of the sounds going on in the track... a very pronounced BOOOM-rhythmrhythmrhythm-BOOM-BOOOM etc.

I've hear of sidechaining and I think I've sort of figured it out, but as to the correct compression settings I'm really unclear about. ALSO, should the kick channel be routed into the synth? Or the other way around? And onto which channel is compression applied?

compressor on the pad send the kick to the compressor mess with the decay and ratio untill desired pump is acheived. the exact way to do it depends on the compressor and daw you use.

depends what DAW you are using.

In ableton just use the compressor.

hit sidechain and select the kick.

to make it smooth just use a softer knee.

you need to hit the arrow button on the top of it first though to expose the sidechain options.
