How to sidechain while using kong and redrum in reason??

Post by lyons238 » Sun Jan 16, 2011 6:07 pm

yeah so im starting a house beat today and i ran into some confusion. im trying to sidechain my bassline so that i can hear my kicks obv...

but im using kong to create my drums and i have kong wired to 2 redrums so that i can trigger the kong sounds using redrum which iv become used to doing.

so my question is how do i sidechain when using this method?

use a spider audio splitter and route your kick through it, then connect one output of that to redrum-kong and another to the sidechain input on the compressor on your bass

edit: this is wrong sorry

Check this out - straight from Propellerheads and includes a sidechain combinator download (rotary knobs already assigned). I would do it yourself first a number of times so that you understand what's going on before using the combinator.

enjoy!

- create a combinator
- within this make a 14:2 mixer, redrum, kong and an spider audio merger and splitter. (Hold shift when you create them to stop them auto wiring)
- on the redrum, route each gate out cv to the gate out cv on kong. This lets you control the kong with the redrum step sequecncer.
- route each audio out channel to a channel on the mixer.
- expand the kong and route each pad to the channel of your choosing with the drum output drop down menu at the bottom. This will only give you 7 channels or you can use the man audio out to add another channel.
- find your kick channel, re-route it to the splitter side of the spider splitter (on the right). One of the outputs will go back into the mixer where it was routed before, another one will go to the sidechain input on the compressor on your bass.

Hope this helps, add me on aim if youve got any more questions about Reason

You can use either really, you could use the NN19 of NNXT as well - basically any midi note will act as the trigger for the compressor to kick in (by hooking it into the sidechain input of the compressor.

So for instance, if you route the out of the redrum into the sidechain, then any note played by the redrum (any channel of it;s 10) will trigger the compressor. This is why commonly the kick and the hats are used, in dubstep you might want to use the snare as well. If you routed just the out from just one channel on the redrum (rather than the main out) then only this would trigger the compressor.

It doesn't matter what instrument is being used (it could be a synth for instance), if it's out is going into the sidechain of the compressor then this will act as the trigger.

Don't sidechain the kick your using to the synth, make another redrum patch and sidechain that kick to the lead/pad whatever it is then turn down the spider audio merger on the mixer so it doesn't play obviously :)
