how to use a eq creatively
if you only use one eq then ur doing it all wrong. u need 2 eq's one for creative use and one for corrective/mix use. thats the best order for them creative followed by corrective.
I like to use sweeps of all kinds with the first eq to evolve sound over time and do your normal mixdown shit with the second. its better to keep them separate so you can go mad crazy with one then tame and fit it in the mix with the other. trying to mixs these 2 eq uses in one eq normally goes wrong and u can lose focus of what u want to do.
so i wanted to see 2 eqs on all ur channels from now on

I tend to use filters for creative purposes, EQ for corrective.
Re: how to use a eq creatively
well they are the same thing but u get more flexibility with a eqDreadfunk wrote:I tend to use filters for creative purposes, EQ for corrective.

This, because if you start boosting certain frequencies it becomes too smeared and a lack of energy develops.Dreadfunk wrote:I tend to use filters for creative purposes, EQ for corrective.
I barely use eqs at all if I'm honest.

Re: how to use a eq creatively
Why not just go crazy with effects, and use one eq as your "corrective eq." I mean unnecessary sweeps are just so much more awesome with an eq, and so much easier to automate than a filter, DERP! Plus a second eq is totally gonna help when your going nuts with one in front of it!

Re: how to use a eq creatively
i do this all the time. for example standard roll off on one and automate the other. its good for that. anyone who hates is just doing it cuz they want to look cool and think their methods are superior.

Re: how to use a eq creatively
Then why don't you post one of your tracks. A roll off can easily be achieved with a filter right? I'm mostly curious as to why you guys are automating your eq's though? I mean eq isn't gonna give you any stereo difference, if anything it's just gonna ride up and down from thin to fat, taking up all the space that other instrumentation should occupy. And with the additional eq, it's just gonna make that signal disappear when another more prevalent signal comes into the same space. Creative eq is just filtering to me. Why not focus on the song itself, instead of telling everyone that dual eq's on every channel will make you the shit.makemerich wrote:i do this all the time. for example standard roll off on one and automate the other. its good for that. anyone who hates is just doing it cuz they want to look cool and think their methods are superior.

Re: how to use a eq creatively
sometimes i feel the need to put different eq's on a certain element but making them kick in at different times of a tune
obviously only have one of the eqs active at a time to not mess the sound up..

Re: how to use a eq creatively
The only thing wrong is this statement. A sweeping generalisation at best, a better way to start would have been 'I have found the use of two EQ's beneficial creatively because of X, Y, Z. Nobody is doing it 'wrong', and there is a slight whiff of self importance in your original post and subsequent replies once your 'knowledge nugget' was questioned.if you only use one eq then ur doing it all wrong.
You don't need to throw your toys out when you are pulled up on something. If everyone is 'doing it wrong' then you need to justify your statement.
This place doesn't need to change, and if you have been on here before for any length of time, you should know what to expect. Examples of the technique you are describing would help your case, no?
