Sorry for being such a noob, but is the drum machine a sampler or does it create drum sounds?

Most of it sounds are synthesized, but its hi-hats and cymbals, I think, are 6 bit samples. But the thing itself isn't capable of samping.

Although Roland being Roland they've stuck out at least a few more recent things that have similar names but are nothing to do with the original eg the MC-303 is a sample based drum machine / groovebox and has very little to do with the classic bass synth...

The thing about these drums is that, despite all your wizardry at synthesis, you will never be able to create these drums sample for sample in an ordinary synthesizer, they're purpose built to sound better fatter etc. Also, I heard something somewhere about the drummachines creating frequencies above the range of human hearing that interact with the frequencies your hearing to change the sound.
