Post by serox » Tue May 17, 2011 9:07 pm

Old Techno track I use to love playing. any pointers on how to make the pad? im so weak at spotting the waveforms. Also, is it one note or a chord?

I wish my laptop was working so I could take a stab at it. Pretty certain it sounds like two-tone chords though.

Yeah just a chord made of two notes as opposed to the traditional three

Track and a half the mate. One of UR's finest hours imo.

I hear a sustained cord, slightly detuned...

I don't know wtf your asking broknocker, there are a tun of sustained notes in here, from all different kinds of voices. Is there a specific spot in the song you're asking about.

The first long sustained note that then starts changing notes. :D

It sounds like a short organ sample looped. If you've got a soft synth organ ( -q- ) you can record a chord and then throw it in a sampler with a short loop time, otherwise there's lots of jazzy organ tunes on youtube. Good luck!

looptime? hmmm...not sure what that is without a sampler in front of me.

I always use the standard FL sampler...

stringy? do you mean the chords might be layered with a string?

Jesus christ my ears are shit.

How would one go about this? I make a sustained two tone chord and save it. Then make a singe tone string, would that need to be one of the keys used to make the two tone chord?

Then once I have the correct string note, I guess I add that into a sample? then layer them?

that's a dyad; a chord always contains 3 notes or more :P

Now you lot are confusing me:/ who is correct?

btw, the two tone thing I think I can hear it now. The string (?) is the higher note thing that is sustained right?

The two tone chord keeps restarting, is this the loop thing creating the effect????

yeah i think it definitely sounds like a string sample with loop points, bc when they start using different notes (around 0:20) the loop cycle gets shorter on higher notes and longer on lower notes
The notes within the diad that the strings (or organ, or something..) play are a minor 3rd apart .. the note that acts as root is the higher one (it's louder) and the lower one is 3 semitones beneath.

That's a pad and a half, I really wish my laptop was working haha

Listening again, It could easily be a tiny sample from some tune with strings in it. If you listen in the beginning, there's a lower tone that kind of clicks in and out with the loop, which at first made me think he was triggering two notes, but it could be something in the sample that we can't quite make out. So it's definitely two tones but he probably isn't playing two notes. and yeah the loop sounds shorter when he plays it higher, so almost definitely a sample.

Well you can just buss everything into one channel, put an edison in there, and record it. Then take that recording, put it in a sampler where you can modulate the loop points, then just loop a small section of the sample. When you build the sample, make sure there is some movement, so you'll hear slightly abrupt jumps at the loop point.

My workflow for a lot of stuff now looks like this: Jam out and record elements of a song, like a fairly traditional song. Mix them and give them the characteristics of an older recording. Then take those elements and start cutting them up and assembling them into a contemporary style song, ie filtered, effected, compressed, chopped, heavily modulated. It is like twice the work, but whatever, it takes you further towards sounding like yourself.

Think there was a young punx masterclass where they discussed this technique. Don't know if the music is your style, but it was pretty interesting the extent they'd go to create their sound.
