Interesting sound design

Post by ENNO » Mon Jun 06, 2011 9:35 pm

I just finished playing Killzone 3 there and couldn't help notice how well engineered some of the sounds where. Anyone else know any other forms of media such as movies or games that have interesting sound design?

I really like the sound design in Halo Reach. Saw a vid of them tweaking each object to sound differently determained by what surface it was on [metal/dirt/grass/water/concrete]. Could be deemed as overkill but for a game that big is seems worth it. :)

Thought cod5 had quality sound design. Really like the distant explosions. Just from a pure auditory pleasure pov.

In terms of sound design deadspace well impressed me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we1oLVRo ... re=related

The weapon sounds are meaty and appropriate, the monsters sound especially gooey and disgusting and the com link sound made me jump more than a few times.

Infamous has some pretty cool sounds too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fmz1Uqskyk

Deus Ex had pretty good sound design for an oldish game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73AWJ4Sz9tA (although there was hardly anything I didn't like about that game, so I may be getting clouded by nostalgia).

Also sacrifice has some sick sounds in it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERAOfr8a ... re=related

The new Assassin's creed has pretty incredible sound design.
The entire game soundtrack was incredible.
I found myself just wondering around the city for hours listening to the different tracks and effects.
Beautiful stuff

I had to mention Mirrors Edge as a side note here.
It still has the best Soundtrack in a game yet.
Solar fields music is just awesome.
Deep, contemplative.

I think I should go back and give killzone 3 a go. I remember playing through the single player when it was originally released and both me and my brother commented on how awful the sound was. the game was actually rushed through (Guerilla Games basically admitted it) so certain elements were left unpolished.

I think the in-game sound design (gun fire, running on different surfaces, etc...) is pretty good. it's just everything done for the cut-scenes is fucked up. probably the same sound engine from killzone 2 is used but they fucked up when making the cut-scenes. whatever.

I always loved the sound design for Perfect Dark, on Nintendo 64. probably is half nostalgia.

Shame the game itself was utter shit.

A lot of people talkin crazy in here. Wrigzilla knows where it's at though.

Some other mentions...Red Dead Redemption anyone? I was also impressed with L.A.Noire too. A lot of the Resident Evil games have great sounds in them too...and Bioshock and er Dead Island looks to have an amazing soundtrack and sound effects from what I've seen in the trailers so far. Not forgetting classics like Ocarina Of Time.

Gonna get controversial here but I'd also like to offer the ORIGINAL Pokemon games into this, also The Legend Of Zelda: Links Awakening. They may have been on the original Game Boy but they made the best use of what they had to work with and I still rate those sounds now.

Holy crap...how has no one mentioned Half-Life 2? Their bio-organic sounds were amazing.

if anybody watches breaking bad in the last episode there was a bit where a plane sound in the distance was mixed with some kind of a pitch riser sound or maybe its all synthesis. anyway you wouldnt think so but there are some cool sounds on that show.

Have to second the CoD games, Dead Space 2 as well, and the first was quality too. Nice sound design, bit cliche at times with regards to the sound track, but ultimately the cliche worked and that's what matters. I heard some cool sounds in the Insidious movie too; wooden crackling sounds for the joints of demons and things. Can't think of many more off the top of my head, bit outta the loop atm. Also, Metal Gear Solid 1 (I know it's old) has some really cool and crunchy old school sounds, I mean obviously it's not technically amazing, but the sounds themselves are really nice.

I would have to say Amnesia. The sound design is groundbreaking or futuristic or anything like that. But the feeling that they create is unreal :o I haven't been able to bring myself to play that game in a long time.

Can't wait to hear the battlefield 3 stuff, saw the trailer for them online and the sound design was what actually caught me! Ridiculously good stuff!
