Having trouble getting my kick drum to sound "FAT" , HELP!!

Post by LucazMusik » Thu Jun 30, 2011 10:04 pm

Hi im having some trouble with my kick drums...
Heres a tune i made last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=balzjO7eMv4 .. Ive only been making dubstep for a short period of time so bare with me :w:

& Here is the kind of kick drum i am trying to achieve.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OT5HOomN7k ..
What am i doing wrong? is it the sample/vst he is using that just gives it that fat sound or is he doing something else (Compressing ect)

Sorry i am a total noob but you gotta start somewhere right?

for not producing for a long time, those basses are pretty sick. What'd you use?

and the kick sounds fine to me.

the tracks sound just the same imo. kick drum is the same. u could try subtle distortion/bitcrushing, increase lows and highs and decrease mids. compression. transient shaping. etc.
...in my opinion

Slight bit of tube distortion.
Route to a bus and add a very short reverb.
Layer a kick that has nice lows with a kick that has nice mid/high end character.
Trying to get on MTV is like trying to be employee of the month at McDonald's.

So i just route to an fx track & add a short reverb on it? like short decay time or?
& im a massive noob lol im not sure what this lows and highs & mids stuff means
Is it like the low is more of a subby thing where as the high is like a piercing sound? lol that was a poor explanation

*EDIT* i meant my explanation just incase you thought i meant yours lolll

Layer 3 kicks: 1 in the hihgs, 1 in mids, one subby kick with a long tail. eq them and compress, and transient shape.

did you buy it or get the demo? it looks pretty good to me, but silence one every ten seconds is a no go. try flux bittersweet.

also the eq'ing. well what daw are you in? does it have a native eq? probably so use that one and boost the lows and highs and lower the mids
...in my opinion

Don't mention it ;-)
For the bass, I would do the opposite, and sidechain the mix of it to the kick drum...but that may be too complicated. If it is, just don't put the eq on the bass.
