Red Squares Rules of Improvement.

Post by oprs » Fri Jul 15, 2011 6:28 pm

just thought i would throw the helping hand out,

First things first. stop thinking in the box.
Goes for bro steppin and dungeon masters alike.

After a while, we all seem to get in that rut, you know what rut im talking about and one thing i have come across is to start doing things unconventionally. Its the only way your gonna get better and really define your style.

Cant get your snare to sound right? Fuck it. dont fret for hours because its not worth it and by then your gonna lose all progression and end up forcing yourself to settle and end up with something your not gonna enjoy. Nothings worse then spending six hours working out some beats only to realize hey that still sounds shit.
GET SOME CLAPS.
Lately i have ran across some awesome clap samples, that do the job just as well as snares do.

If you happen to have access to a cord that has two male ends, try running it into the headphone out and mic in at the same time, load up your DAW, or audacity.
Find a video you wanna sample from, record from your output into your mic input and bam. Your golden. Now im not saying this is always the best routine. but whatever it work, but words of advice on this, on a video have the volume at a ridiculously low level if not your gonna experience clipping like never before. But this leads to another good thing, you can find some really cool odd incidentals when you record something and its too high. Give it a try, the only thing it can hurt is a couple minutes off production time.

Atmosphere. Some things ive been hearing lately, the drums sound good. bass at a moderate level, but it just seems really empty in the background.
This can make or break your track sometimes. Just by adding a little background noise it sets everything into play. Grab yourself a nice pad or stab and stretch it like the grand canyon. Add reverb, reverse that shit, high pass it low pass it. Do whatever, you can get some really unique sounds by doing this if you play your cards right. Dont go over board on the effect though you can lose that genuine originality too it by trying to process it too much.

K.I.S.S. this is a MAJOR one, keep it simple stupid. seriously, if you take something you've made that your not happy with. 7 times out of 10 its because you tryed to cram all your ideas in it at once, one thing you gotta realize, yeah they might be good ideas, but not all good ideas go together. I found my self battling this one alot.

And lastly remember. its all about fun and enjoying yourself and pushing to the next level, some people progress a lot faster then others, but whats it matter when you finely reach that point? You got there, thats all it matters.

Will be adding on to this as i see necessary,

And here is some 3 sample packs.
first one has some 808 Kicks, Some claps, snares and some perc

First break pack.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ox71ej3mf6okvfq
has around 300.

the next two are gonna be a ton of breaks i found some where, just load these up slice to desired effect. and bam.
ill upload these later when i get home from the movies.

:W:
have fun, fuck around make some damn music rinse and repeat as desired.

Nice tips.

My advice is to just do whatever you want. Don't be like "Oh I gotta make this brostep track yeah lets open Massive and get my Vengance samples out.". Just fuck with shit. A good producer/songwriter/composer/whatever can make anything sound good. Because, often, even if the bass patch is juicy as shit, if the songwriting and implementation is off, then the song will still be shit. Genres don't have to stick to certain sounds, it's best to just experiment and go to sounds you've never thought of to work with the genre you're going for. It will still work.

Just do random shit like reverse drums and weird ass patterns instead of the Kick on the 1 and Snare on the 3. It's much better and more interesting and will make people remember you, rather than you just doing that played out brostep drum beat. Offer something no one else is.

Very good post with substantial pointers.

Also, thank you for the samples, and I will be eagerly awaiting an opportunity to peruse through those breaks. 8)

Really? The 320 is only 7.8MB... I thought that was an acceptable size?
