Spor, Noisia, koan sound type twisting bass
Obviously theres gonna be a heck of a lot of resampling and distortion involved, however I'm really interested in how to start it off in massive for example, and to get the right kinda dynamics that give it the kind of twisting morphing sound, as it obviously isn't just a lowpass and a comb going on here.
Example: at 2:00
I would post this on 'that sound' thread as per usual but it seems to have gone dead, maybe a november thread is needed wub?

A good start with reese basses is to detune two (or more) saws (or any waveform), play a C3 for like 4 bars, put a notch filter on it with a long attack or a slow lfo , distort and bounce it down. load it into a sampler and start experimenting on that i guess. sorry for the vagueness
Edit: Try using a band pass filter instead of a lowpass

Dungeon is basically slowed down neurofunk, so it's not surprising.

In theory, if you took a neuro tune and slowed it down to 140, could you release it/play it out? Hmmm...might try that on Audacity at lunch.

Re: Spor, Noisia, koan sound type twisting bass
Is there good tutorials on reese/hoover basslines for operator?
Re: Spor, Noisia, koan sound type twisting bass
COMB FILTER FIRST - THEN BAND PASS (and rejects with high resonance) - THEN SATURATE THE HELL OUT OF IT (+resample).
de-sync your lfo's. look, you're noisa!

Re: Spor, Noisia, koan sound type twisting bass
well, i would try putting a saw (try different resolutions) on op1, and a square on op2... then automate the volume on op2. that would be a start to what you're trying to achieve.zonetrooper5 wrote:Is there good tutorials on reese/hoover basslines for operator?

Resampling. Here are a few things to remember while doing so:
1. Synthesize a sound with subtle movement.
This can come in the form of long/drawn out envelopes or slow lfo speeds. Do the best you can to accentuate the movement inside the synth itself. The amount of distortion used here and every following stage should be minimal. Also make sure that there is a phase-y quality to the sound either achieved from detuneing oscillators, unisono, etc or a light combination of any (again no rules, right?)
2. Frequency split.
while doing this make sure to consider the previous statement while adding effects and accentuating particular movements in the sound. Also, from what I've learned, when you add distortion, you introduce harmonics to a sound. Keeping this in mind you may want to add distortion before the filters that separate your bands, or continuously eq-ing as you ad distortion...I'm not sure, but that's what has worked for me.
3.Bounce a sustained key of 4 or more bars.
4.Load the audio into a sampler.
The SUPER special BASIC conceptual thing to remember about doing this is that the sound can be mapped across the keyboard/different pitches, ultimate slowing down/speeding up the movements that you created earlier during the synthesis stage and the frequency splitting stage. Playing the sound lower or higher yields some really awesome results. It is also choosing the start and stop time of the sound while chopping up your bassline that creates interesting movement.
Keeping these points in mind, you can create some gnarly sounds with all sorts of filter movements, distortion, and fx at different stages of the resampling process. Also, continuing the process on the same sustained sample yields even crazier sounds. Feel free to add fx/distortion along the entire process. Remember subtlety .

What, people still confuse hoovers with reeses? A reese with square waves is still a reese. A hover is a Square(actually pulse) wave with Pulse width modulation.goodeh wrote:a hoover is detuned square waves with a pitch envelope on goin bwwoooommm (up then down)

yeah, basically. i don't make hoovers so i forgot how they're madeBrisance wrote:What, people still confuse hoovers with reeses? A reese with square waves is still a reese. Re: Spor, Noisia, koan sound type twisting bass
Cheers guys this is helping so fucking much!! Just to be a pain 1 more question. I get resampling...kinda but do you get your sound with all the distortion you want, all the plugins and pretty much what you want before you load into your sampler? And also do you load more than one note into your sampler? Surely sample only one note is gonna lead to some serious timing issues?

I just made this using massive, just two saws detuned against each other. I didn't do anything else inside the synth. Then I bounced down a sample to audio and dropped it in my sampler, and added a few distortion plugs. Only filtering that's going on is 2 autofilters with LFO'd notches. I'm gonna start doing some actual notching automations to see what I can come up with
