Production Bible v2 - Niche Advice for Reason Users.

Post by blizzardmusic » Sun Aug 10, 2008 12:04 pm

DRUMS

Making your bassline drum kit is pretty simple, and contains of the three sounds, the kick, the hihat, and normally, the clap. Sometimes these sounds can be altered to make a more distinctive sound. Here is my tutorial. Sorry if you don't understand what I mean. I'm only going to say what to press in, I can't really help you with mastering or the mixing down elements of it. Sorry!
Here we go:

Kicks

The kick drum is an important part of any genre of music. It sometimes adds strength to the mix. When I program my kick drums, I press them on step 1, 5, 9 and 13. Example on number 1 picture.

Hihats

You can use a shaker or a hihat, but normally I use a shaker. This for me goes on the steps 3, 7, 11 and 15. Example on number 2 picture.

Claps
Claps can be of any sound that you prefer. You might want a very punchy clap to go behind the strength and 'boom' of your kick drum. I press my claps in at steps 5 and 13. Example on number 3 picture.

Other drum sounds
After you have the three main elements down, its up to you what you do next. You might add a bongo, or a tambourine, again, its out of choice.

BASS

Every now and again I see people asking the same thing: 'how do you make a bassline wobble. To be frank, it is easy. I use the Subtractor Synthesizer to make this sound, and I start off with a simple square wave on Osc 1. Example on number 4 picture. See how I've pointed to the mouse what a square wave is.

Then I will activate oscillator 2 and select a sawtooth wave, and put that on the seventh octave. Example on number 5 picture.

Now I will use filter one and filter envelope. Firstly, I will use filter one and put quite a low value for the Frequency (freq) option, and a slighty higher value for the Resonance (res) option. See example on 6.1 picture.

Now the filter envelope is used. I drag my filter envelope Attack (A) to just below the half way line, and drag the filter envelope Decay (D) to just higher than the half way like. See example on 6.2 picture.

SUB

For my sub, I usually have a preset patch that I used, but considering I can't give you this, I suggest using the already set sine wave on the Malstrom Synthesizer. See example on 7 picture.

MELODY

Melody is completely subjective, and so is the key your melody is in. There isn't a perfect sound, but I often use the Pan Flute in the NNXT Sampler's 'Reed and Pipe Folder' which is found in 'Reason Factory Sound Bank, NNXT Sampler Patches, and then Reed and Pipe. See example on 8 picture.

Easy fella

I think you should change the title of the thread from 'bassline', which refers to the bassline in any style of music, to something like 'niche', 'speed garage', '4x4' tutorial....

Just to save confusion like ;)

this is fairly useful to someone who hasn't got a clue what they are doing, but i think we need to aim more towards explaining how and why things work as opposed to just "this is how i do it so copy me and u'll have something similar"
I walkthrough of each of the reason devices is something i've thought about doing but it would take a hell of a lot of effort plus my understanding of the malstrom is a little weak.

Try this thread for a few patches for Reason users.... ---> http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight= (Try downloading my patches in the top post, all made for reason ;))

Also look at Blizzards other thread for patches and samples...!!! ---> http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=55078 (I know that peff.com listed in that list has some decent free refills)

+ have you checked out Propellerheads website directly for free refills? ---> http://www.propellerheads.se/download/r ... splay_main

Lastly.... I know this is a wasteman suggestion, but.... google reason refills! :P
