Autechre - Second Peng (Threnody RMX) - 1YR ANNIVERSARY reup

Post by threnody » Wed Aug 16, 2006 5:40 pm

Final ever reup for this one after a YEAR of downloads.

After this expires it will be up on my Virb player (http://virb.com/threnody) forever more. Big up to all the commentors and downloaders over the past year. Glad people have been feeling it and finding out about other tracks of mine as a result of listening.

There were talks about this getting a limited white label pressing with Combat records but it was adjudged too risky so here it is in 320 form.

Original message read:-

I've just done this remix for a mix i'm doing. The original was released in 95 on Warp, a filthy halfstep monster which predated dubstep by a good 6 years. For any1 who knows the original i've kept reasonably faithful to it, just added some sub and structure and brought it into the 21st century(the original was over 10mins long!).

Enjoy + any comments welcomed!

The production sounds really tight, and I'm not familiar with the original, but there doesn't seem to be enough going on to sustain it for nearly seven minutes (been guilty of this myself in the past admittedly).

There's not enough of the 140 element in this to stop it being weighed down and feeling 70bpm - admittedly I don't really like this deathly slow halfstep sound so I might not be the right person to ask. Maybe some other percussion to give it some energy might lift it a bit. It's odd that the main beat's a massively slowed-down dnb beat as it does sort of prove that dnb needs the tempo to be that fast to make it work to my ears

Is this an official remix by the way? Kind of liked some of the Autechre stuff I've heard
Hmm....

Cheers Shonky....haha i hadn't really realised it was like half tempo dnb til you said! I hear what you're saying about it being minimal for the time...i already cut it by a minute (and as i said the original was nearer 11!!!)....it is a tricky one coz the original just kind of slowly develops getting denser and denser and sounded v long and almost monotonous when left in the mix so i tried to make it a bit snappier and add some subbass that is lacking from the original.

I guess some kind of counter-melody after 32 of the main body would remedy this and maybe a bit more atmosphere/stripping away some would give it focus rather than just drift.....I reckon it's quite different to a lot of my stuff which is very maximalist(!) and it's drawn out as it's specifically meant for this production mix i'm recording for launching my site proper.

Oh it isn't an official remix just something for my sets really although i will play it to the autechre boys to see what they think....

Cheers for the fresh ears and perspective mate!

Cool, it's difficult when you're trying to keep the original vibe when it's a known track. There was a tune off Anvil Vapre (I think) that had a really raw distorted electro feel, really dark and oppressive feel, that I think would go well in a dubstep set, but I can't remember the name of it offhand.

You posted any of your other tunes up - would be interested to hear them, but don't remember seeing any in a while?
Hmm....

yeah this is the 4th track off Anvil Vapre.

As for other tracks i've been working constantly on them (got about 10 which are 85% complete)...I will unveil a couple in this mix i'm doing but simply nothing is complete yet....maybe i will post a couple of the nearly complete bits for people to hear to see what the reaction is. I'm really really pleased with them tho(!)...

Wedge + a couple of others have been test driving some for me which has really helped work out how they work in the mix and i've got a few dubs pressed recently.....working on getting a small release out by october....

You can check the dubplates section of www.uktrendsmusic.co.uk for a few sneak previews but these are v outdated to my ears.

Big up yourself Shonky!

Cheers Will. The original is untouchable really, such a deep track but i'm glad you like what i've done....hopefully a bit more urgent(?) and 'dancefloor orientated'....albeit at 6 in the morning when you're mashed up proper and can only sway!!

Narcossist, looking forward to hearing what you think mate....the cutting/filtering wasn't nearly as time consuming as i thought, pitching the bass was the hardest part! This tune has just stood out to me for time as remixable and coz it already sounded great there wasn't as much needed to get into the whole 'making everything sound sparkling' ting....all in all the quickest little track i've 'completed' by a good 18 months!!!!

the original is pretty much un fuk withable.
honestly the variations from the original to this seem quite small.maybe that was what you where trying to do, i dunno.
it sounds similar, i went back and listened to both.

maybe i am missing something !!

or i could be not in the best frame of mind to compare tracks right now, but anyways your version definately is more pushy...if that makes sense.it sounds a helluva lot more deeper, hell the original is like 10 mins, i would have liked to see this at like 4-5.

not to say it isnt quality though, because it is,its fukin deep.some heavy late night vibes on this, is defo a keeper !!

Well said! Yeah it is very similar for that reason (the riff is untouchable in my opinion!)....The main difference is i've added a layer of low sub to give some extra movement and coz the original had no sub apart from that on the bass drum.....the beat was already dubsteppaish although i did use my own hits to give a slightly different sound...Oh and i also fiddled with the structure to make it intro:main body:breakdown:main body 2:outro and glitched up a few of the beats!

Having listened to it with these comments on board i could easily chop a minute which would make it snappier but all i'm really using it for is as a nice little VIP for a mix (to appear soon!).

Cheers Marsyas!

Ha ha...big up Metalbox! Yeah it is faithful to the original however the melody was built up from a single hit pitched and stuff. Never underestimate the power of noise reduction!!!!

Liking this remix good job. Although I haven't heard the original. I only wish my tracks were past 50% finished.

finally got round to listening

into it mate - really intense and trudging in the best possible way. I haven't heard the term showerface for a while but this feels like it'd be a proper grimacer on a big rig. lot of metalic depth to it.

You ever been into any of the spezial materialz stuff? reminds me of some of there stuff. peace
