New to producing, what should I get?
Yeah, im learning how to produce, currently I am using FL studios 8 & have been wondering about getting a Midi Controller (Keyboard). Is it better to get a synthesizer or a Midi Controller? actually, should I get either one? Kinda sketchy, I dont wana waste money.
Re: New to producing, what should I get?
Only buy hardware when you actually know you'll need it and use it. BUt I'd say controller instead of synthesizer.

IMHO, these are the essential purchases:
Computer
DAW (e.g. FL Studio, Ableton, Logic, etc.)
Midi Controller / Keyboard
Monitors
Everything else is a bonus.

Best use for a midi keyboard, imo, is to hawk off for some spare money, buy weed witthat, and then produce tunes...
Just imo though.

Re: New to producing, what should I get?
I took everyones advice here when I started making music..
I went out and bought a midi keyboard, monitors, good soundcard, the lot !
Now I use......
£17 headphones
My Qwerty keyboard
and my old soundcard cause the "professional" one died.
So, I would say don't buy anything on a impulse and learn how to write without all that fancy stuff, then when you get it, you'll actually be buying it cause you can't write without it.
Just my 2Cents.

I often put away my £200 headphones and monitors and just use a pair of cheap shit headphones that have zero sub so I am concentrating on making music only!
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Re: New to producing, what should I get?
I have access to KRKsand opt to use my Sony stereo for mixdowns
... whats that say to the 'dude you got nice mixes' comments?
Heh, right now Im using my default laptop soundcard, and the headphonejack is broken, so only one side of the signal comes through... I send that into my CDJs (which I got for under 50 bucks) and set them to mono so it creates a false balance. But hey, as long as Im in this state, phase is no concern of mine. Hihat fine bits are getting a lil annoying though.
Learned to DJ on windows media player and circuit bent walkmans.
Dont spend money.
Breakage even said he uses an old 80s high fi speaker/head unit to mixdown on in that one interview for that one magazine that one time...

Re: New to producing, what should I get?
haha true, i click like no other, but it'd still be nice to actually hear some chords to work with.
Re: New to producing, what should I get?
Computer
Daw
Soundcard (no maudio)
Monitors
=====
But like the rest of these people that should know better, I've been doing everything on a laptop with laptop speakers with a brick wall at around 80hz or so, just such shit sound quality you couldn't imagine. When I wanna check whats going on, I plug it into my sony hifi (and am usually sickened by what is going on w/ my kicks and bass). I've got the krk's w/sub and a really nice mpk sitting right over there. -->
But I'm not using that stuff.
But really, Computer, daw, soundcard, monitors. That is all you need to make music that is releasable.
