Cartridge/Stylus help

Postby Lichee » Fri Apr 13, 2012 8:32 pm

I bought a pair of used 1200's recently and the guy I bought them from said he had them from knew. They came with 4 Stanton 500 carts and stylus's (I see them on most Technics) and 2 Stanton Discmaster 2 carts with stylus'. One of the Discmaster stylus' is worn out and although the others all sound ok, considering they're potentially 2 decades old I'm planning on replacing the stylus's on 2 of the cartridges.

My question is, which stylus' should I replace (The 500's or the discmasters)? Or, shall I buy knew carts all together? I would prefer to buy new stylus' because of the money but because i'm gonna be using my decks for a long time to come, I don't mind spending a bit.

Cheers

I use the shure M 44-7 myself. Awesome carts and stylus. Great for scratching. I've also got a pair of the shure white labels which have an amazing sound but a bit lower output volume.I use serato so I stick with the 447s

I'm not gonna be scratching at all or at least I don't intend to does that matter? It seems silly buying needles for scratching if i'm not scratching but i'm not sure

I'd go for the Shure White Labels then.

sweet I'll look into them. I've decided i'm gonna get Serato just because it's either spend tonnes on more records or be limited to the ones I own, if it's digital playback does it really matter what needles I use, apart from jumping issues and wearing out the vinyls?

i owned a pair of discmasters a few years ago; they were awful.

have never had a problem w/ the ortofon elektro's I bought like 7 years ago. shure 447's or 83's (i think it's 83s) are always good, as are white labels.

ok cool, I literally have no idea so this is all news. I think i'm going to get Shure 447's, because I already have Technics headshells so will work out cheaper than Whitelabels and the reviews seem to suggest they're good for tracking and thus Serato.

Hmm the Shure 447 will batter your vinyl, its a scratching needle if your mixing I'd avoid it if possible. Christ I fucked up my very first cut dubplate with one of those, it literally cut a new groove in the dubplate, making it skip at the same place everytime after the first play. However it did desperately need replacing and I had too much weight on the tone arm. You learn the hard way I guess. I've just got standard blue concordes now but I wanted the white labels really.
