Electronic Explorations - Mix of the Year poll

Post by automat3000 » Sat Dec 06, 2008 4:52 pm

As Electronic Exploration's first birthday has been and gone, I thought there wouldn't be a much better way to celebrate Rob Booth's seminal show than to hold a vote on mix of the year (including those few that were pre-2008 and the most recent – in other words all mixes thus far are eligible).

Musically, nothing has been so essential to me in my life than this show, including Mary Anne Hobbs'. It's the only podcast / radio show I never fail to download and listen to in full without fail. I've discovered so much new music from listening to Rob's show; not just dubstep, but anything electronic that pushes the boundaries and that's what I love the most. I know a lot of you on here love the show as much as I do, and that's why Dubstepforum is the perfect place to host this vote. In fact if it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't even know about EE, so thanks to DSF aswell.

Although this is a vote on your favourite mix, the show wouldn't be what it is without Rob faultless and on-point selection. Sometimes he throws in some 'ageing' favourites, perhaps when or if he struggles to fill a 2 hour show every single week (and who could blame him!). Regardless, they're always welcome gems. On that point, let's not forget that he does this off his own back, unpaid and in the free time he gets when he isn't working for a living. That's when you really have to respect the guy for all the work he does. It might be a labour of love, but we're all reaping the benefits! :D

This might seem like a love letter to Rob  , but I've realised how much I really love this show, and would be genuinely upset if stopped anytime soon. So, anybody who listens to this show – full-time or otherwise – take a few moments to vote for your favourite mix and say a few words of appreciation (I know there's already an appreciation thread, but I thought it needed an anniversary edition. :) ) It'll be tough to decide for you no doubt. God knows there's been some bloody good ones. Feel free to mention which mixes, however many, didn't quite make that final vote as well. Let's hope that this thread is popular enough for most of these to get at least one vote. There's not really been any bad ones.

I'll the vote off with Mojib. Possibly my most listened to mix out of them all, I really love it. Something a bit different than most of the show – hip-hop flavoured beats, downtempo and breaks – it's a real musical journey. Ones that nearly got top spot for me were Forensix(mcr), Marlow, Escapee Planes, Milanese, Dub U, Ranking Records, Nick Argon, BunZer0 & DJ Madd. But I'm sure everyone's votes will be wildly different to mine. (Let me know if I've missed any out in the poll).

And here's looking to the future Rob, whatever it holds. But most of all – long live Electronic Explorations – the best god-damn electronic music podcast on the planet.

www.electronicexplorations.org

:edit: Dammit, too many poll options (does anyone know what the max is). Sorry to anyone's favourite that's not included in the main list, I deleted a lot of non-dubstep  . Obviously press other and state what it is.

It's tempting to give it to any one of those names up there, they were all such excellent mixes and such big names. That is why I am shocked and more than pleased that our girl Shiva rose above all the big names and the hype and the following, and the insider shuffling and the haters... above all the stereotypes about what Dubstep has to be, etc...

In like 18 minutes or something I think... just SMASHING fools.

And she didn't start rocking shows yesterday ---

For 13 years, Indianapolis techno mainstay DJ Shiva has brought a multitude of techno flavors to dancefloors across the US. From electro to minimal, Chicago Jack to Detroit soul, the deepest to the hardest techno, her attention deficit disorder requires variety in both music and technique.

With her foray into the realm of dubstep and bass music, the same rules (or lack of them) apply. From straight up chest rattling bangers to skeletonized exercises in minimal dub to bits and pieces of electro and techno, it’s all in the mix. Utilizing over a decade of experience on the ones and twos, combined with the flexibility and creative possiblities of Ableton Live to re-edit, loop on the fly and add effects and beats, Shiva brings a fresh approach to the dubstep palette.

With several techno releases on wax (including a remix of techno legend Woody McBride) and her recent vinyl release on Dubkraft (w/ Alien Pimp), as well as her radio show on Dubstep.fm, and a new label in the works, Shiva is determined not only to spread the eclectic sounds of dubstep and techno to new audiences, but to quite possibly live in a subwoofer someday.

Do not front on your girl Shiva. PERIOD. Listen to the first part of that mix and tell me that is not the best one. You'd be crazy.

Great post automat! I couldn't agree more with you . I know, I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but Rob & the show have continually improved with each episode. Truly in my opinion this is one of the most essential podcats in any genre of electronic music.

I feel totally honored to have had the man himself drop some of my tunes.

BIG IT

PS. For all of those interested, watch for a Vancouver special on EE, going to be pretty bonkers.

Totally right about Shiva's mix. Listening to it now. Between her's and BunZer0's for me for best of the DSF Takeover sessions. If I could have kept em in the poll I would have, especially them 2.

More of a lurker than a poster on this forum, but just have to agree with all the love being given to EE.

Best Mixes? Difficult. I voted Pangaea, a fucking flawless mix but also loved Barbarix, Vaccine, Mojib, Drumcorps (why no mention of this in the choices??)

But next week is Broken Note, and, I am guessing it could be the mix of the year

I'll have to agree with you, there. The Teknoist comes a close second - Fucking A!!!

My comments are redundant, Rob, but EE is quality, and has opened my ears to some new sounds, which is a great way to prevent oneself from becoming a 9-5 zombie at work. I can't thank you enough! Keep it up!
