MONITORS!

Post by pk- » Thu Apr 26, 2007 4:52 pm

any of you knowledgable producer types know if these are any good?

KRK Rokit RP- 6 Powered Studio Monitor

Image

apparently they involve a 6" Glass Aramid Composite Woofer and a 1" Neodymium Soft Dome Tweeter with Ferro Fluid, which sounds evocative and vaguely sexual.

if not, do you know of any powered monitors for a similar price (don't want to spend more than £300) that do the job nicely?

cheers!

yep theyre pretty good -get the rockit 8s if feeling flush.Or Tannoys at simaar price are good too. I use Tannoy n/field monitors, then 2x15"sub cabs and tops for 'checking the tune' Best of both worlds!

Yep I would have no problems recommending KRK gear. I've got the RP5s and a sub and I'm really really happy with them.

Go for the 8s tho, and get a sub later, cause no monitor will fill out the bass for you.

I want to buy some 2nd hand Genelec 1029 and wondering if it would be better to buy this KRK new or the Genelec which are three years old.

I have M-audio BX8 Studiophiles which I am very happy with. I put them up head to head with some KRKs (not sure what model though), Behringer, and Alesis and easily won, when I bought them some years ago.

yeah I've got DX4 Studiophiles at the moment. They're very crisp but I'm going to use them as sattelites for my tv, and i wouldn't mind something beefier for music.

cheers for all the replies, can any of you suggest a sub to go with these KRKs? do they make one themselves?

you don't have to buy a 'matching' sub tho. If the sub is a good one it'll sound good with any suitable monitors. :)

for 200 quid odd you'd want to look here:

http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers.htm

they make some very well regarded subs for bargain money. 8)

having said that, the Tapco sub at soundcontrol looks like a goo deal for 100 quid. god knows what it sounds like though.
is it?

NO.

Used monitors are a gamble.
Monitors can become unresponsive if exposed to smoke, or pushed excessively.

anybody got some info on these goodies?

Alesis M1 Active MKII

Image

it seems to be the best pruchase for me cos it's cheap considering that it has 6.5" woofer and I have a very little room (approx. 4x4meters) so I guess I wouldn't need a bigger one. Or Is this already too big for such a small room? So anybody has some experience with these monitors?[/img]

i think theyre pretty good. bass is a little overenthusiastic but if theyre booming too much for you, stick a sock in one of the bass ports and they tighten up nicely. i hear the KRK's are damn good altho ive never heard em myself. :D
is it?

NO.

Is a sub really that essential? even in the case of a bigger speakers like one with a 8" woofer? Cos on DOA in the Noisia Q&A they say that they are not using sub at all.

Well, it's not essential. ~Most good monitors easily drop down to 40/50hz and Noisia basslines probably dont go much lower than that anyway. :)

thing is, even though your basslines might be centered around 50hz a sub lets you feel those frequencies more, and for dubstep, the physicality of a tune is a big factor in getting a crowd lively (i'd imagine matty g has a sub or just huge fecking monitors for example) .

I;d say you'd be fine with monitors for now though. If you really find them lacking then you can always add a sub in the future. :D
