Techincs In Trouble?
Read this yesterday and I thought I would share...

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I suppose its almost inevitable that it would happen at some point, but I would have thought that with a resurgence of vinyl sales technics and other manufacturers would be doing better.
What do peeps think?

From what that artical suggests though, the demand isnt really there anymore. The global-ecomomic-credit-buggery isnt helping, but it seems to have been going on for a bit now. They are probably a victim of how good they are. Loads of people buy them second hand cos generally they are up to scratch years after being first made. My Dad's turntable started to fuck it a few months back and that was after 27 years of it working flawlessly.
and make shit? no thanks! for the record though, they've been slowly replacing a lot of internal components with cheaper ones as time goes on. pick up an old 1200 and then pick up a new one - the new ones are lighter...abZ wrote:For one thing the technics turntable is one of the few products that you can still buy that can last you a lifetime. If they made it so you had buy a new one every 5 years they would be selling a ton more. They need to get with the times.
oh and i hear ya festa. i'll never sell the turntables. evar.
Good to know. Mine are at least 10 years old.Misk wrote:and make shit? no thanks! for the record though, they've been slowly replacing a lot of internal components with cheaper ones as time goes on. pick up an old 1200 and then pick up a new one - the new ones are lighter...abZ wrote:For one thing the technics turntable is one of the few products that you can still buy that can last you a lifetime. Mine are too and I lugged 'em up 5 flights of stairs on my own when i first got them... definitely not light. Long-lasting 1200s FTW man, I'm glad there's at least one piece of equipment that doesn't auto-destruct within a few years. Makes me feel safe *hugs decks*abZ wrote:Good to know. erm.. technology has improved though.. so im guesssin the same quality could be got from lighter and cheaper components as technology advances!Misk wrote: for the record though, they've been slowly replacing a lot of internal components with cheaper ones as time goes on. pick up an old 1200 and then pick up a new one - the new ones are lighter...![]()

the weight of the sl1200s is for a good reason. feedback.
people don't realize that when you see them buying taiwan plastic stantons with every button known to humanity on it. what they've end up sacrificing in cost and weight is sound.
low end rumble getting picked up by the cartridges and the platter is the reason why the sl1200 set itself apart from everything else. heavier is a good thing.
to put this in perspective, the thorens 850 audiophile turntable, long considered to be one of the most technically perfect, is 47 lbs.

it will be a sad day if panasonic kill off the technics, but i wouldn't worry, because there will be parts for it forever.
