FREE MASTERING ANYONE???

Post by dj snipaz » Sat May 16, 2009 8:03 am

Hi
as a token of my appreciation for the DSF, i am going to be offering limited free mastering.
This is due to the fact that:
1) I appreciate that a little generosity goes a long way.
&
2) I have recently invested in the equipment/knowlage regarding the mastering process.

All i ask in return is a little feedback so that i can improve my service in the future.

So yeah!
Simple as that!
All you need to is send a link with the WAV (pref 24bit) to my PM inbox & i will get the tune back to you asap.
Thanks

SnipaZ

I'm new to what you guys do with mastering, do you want the whole thing in one wav file, or seperate tracks?
Thanks man, by the way, it's gonna be interesting to see what you can do with it.
Big up

I just need the whole tune as a dry wav file
As long as its already mixed down well enough i can acheive a good master from that.
Please dont add any effects or generators (ie Compression/Limiters) as they will co-incide with the tools i use for mastering.

I'v had some really good stuff sent so far. Keep it comin ppls

Safe

thanks to everyone who sent material to be mastered
Got some REAL good stuff (im not limiting the boundries to only dubstep btw, afterall, a good tune is a good tune, regardless of that genre it is)

The process may take a little longer now, as i have a high volume of tracks to master so just hang fire.

In regards to the question about equipment, a magician never tells his secrets. Whats the risk, you might as well try me out. its free for now afterall!!

Sorry, but this is bollocks. If you can do magic on an Aiwa hi-fi system with one ear cut off, don't you want to tell people about it?

Don't get me wrong - you doing it for free is really great, doing all this stuff is really good, and will help you get loads of experience and hopefully you can really improve people's tunes, and push on and maybe make a go of it. That's where most people start and I wish you the best.

But *every* ME worth their salt happily shares virtually all their 'secrets' because they know the magic is in the ears and the monitoring.

Don't sidestep people's questions, it just looks plain bad. Come on, don't be shy - out with it :)

I don't know if you are planning to sell your service in the future but, if you are, do you really think any musician is going to let you master their work without knowing what equipment you have? They want to know you have the proper equipment to go along with your skills.

i've worked w/ a bunch of mastering guys (and do master a fair bit of material myself)... and really, truthfully, the last thing i want to know is what gear they have. if you say you have a great river eq, i can think, wow, you've got a really great $2500 eq, or i can think, why didn't you spring for the GML? it's a useless discussion, really.

results. results results results. mastering is one of those blessed few things in life where the ends 100% justify the means. I had a project last year where for 2/3 of the tunes i had to bounce to tape, process in mid-side with unbelievable amounts of compression, and do some intense-to-the-point-of-discomfort eq'ing as the original mixes were miserable and the sessions had been lost. it's not about the gear and none of those techniques--or others used in various mastering projects--are hidden.

just create a good product. that's all you need from mastering. there are so many processes you can use and so many bits of kit to get you to places that the actual gear and methods are almost a useless part of the equation.

All very fair and correct, but completely missing the point :)

The point is; if you ask someone a question, do you get a straight answer?

I can't imagine a single case where someone asking 'what did you do to my track?' would not rather hear 'I did x dB of lift @ Xhz with Ozone/Waves eq/whatever' than 'I'm not telling, it's magic'. You can get great results with the right plugins, make no mistake. The OP shouldn't be shy to say what he uses - it is only the results that matter, nothing else.

But some people DO want to know. If people ask, he should at least be straight with them. He was very keen to point out that he has invested in the equipment and 'knowlage' , so why the reluctance, and the guff about magicians? It smells bad.

Again - It's great someone giving up their time for others like that, to hone skills and help people out, to develop and so on. Been there, done that, and with a lot of work who knows what might happen? I sincerely hope it goes well, I just don't like BS :)

Mate at the end of the day he's doing it for FREE.
You're acting like if he doesn't tell us all what he's using he's not a 'real' ME... chill out - it's just a guy tryin to get some practice in. If he wants to share then fair enough, if not then leave him to it!
