what essential uk funky tunes should i be looking for?

Postby one2heavy » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:20 pm

any recommendations as to what some great uk funky releases i should be getting to help me start building up a collection since i fell in love with cooly g's narst/love dub which has got me wanting to delve more into this genre? vinyl stuff preferrably, though am quite happy to cop something if they are only available on mp3.

so far i've got:
cooly g's narst/love dub
hard house banton's sirens ep
zinc/ms dynamite's wile out

i looked into zinc's crack house and geeneus's volumes one but felt they weren't strong enough to go out and buy the vinyl version.

anybody have any idea if any of the tunes that geeneus had in the heavy mixtape with katyb and tippa are out and what they are called (as i haven't seen any tracklists) or if they are coming out?
the mixtape is below if you haven't heard it.
http://soundcloud.com/fabric/geeneus-feat-katy-b-tippa-mixtape

thanks :)

Threads like this will just get you the same bait Funky tunes that everyone else plays. Tread your own path and find some of your own secret bangers!

Also if you don't like Bus It then I'm afraid I can't help you 8)

perhaps. haven't been to too many funky nights so am not fed up yet of the more obvious tunes and just want something to get me going really. and in a way i'd like to work from the more obvious/popular bangers to the less known ones. a couple of stuff is all am really after. :)

Geiom feat. Marita - Sugar Coated Lover

...how could i have forgotten to check this one out, since reminissin was a nice tune

True dat. I just hear one tune I like and then follow the sound to different places and for me I do that when I play out and dig for..might not necessarily be all the same style..I mean one tune can just take you anywhere to another era or style...Just feel it init. Start lookin through the roots of the tune. I don't think it's really posible to like just one style or one time coz it's all linked up and what makes dj'ing and digging such a pleasure for me is spinning a story through this, spinning feelings and they can be totally different. Like sometimes I want deep house or detroit and sometimes it's the funky bashment sound and reggae/dancehall etc and sometimes I want to be ambient and you build your shit and sometimes u want to jump and make the links between it all for whatever reason. Music and :R: really balances me tbh.

Eh for me Hard House Banton's Sirens EP is essential

That's a big post... it's much better to try and draw the dots between as many genres and eras as possible and try to make it all connect and flow nicely!

For the original poster, d/l mixes, find tunes you like, get on discogs, get down your local record shop, use Youtube, etc... research research research! Do it hardcore and you'll build up information over time. It's like being a taxi driver and learning the knowledge

These are FINE TUNES!!! I live in Phoenix, AZ. And I found digital copies pretty easy, except one or two. I had to beg or track down hard. It should be easy to go to BM Soho and buy most of these. GOOD LUCK!!!

Delphic- Doubt (Doc Daneeka's All Space For Grime Mix)
Xxxy- Sing with Us (Elevator Music comp.)

Mosca- Square One (Julio Bashmore Remix)
Altered Natives- Rass Out (2009 Classic Tune)

NEW & Out Soon
Fis-T- Night Hunter (DAMNNN!!!)
DJ Champion- Motherboard (just got it)
Roska- Squark (out in a few weeks)
D- Malice ft. Rebecca Knight- Poison (Roska mix)( Out in April)
Doc Daneeka- Drums in the Deep (I think it's out soon).

Im not trolling, but a lot of the stuff in this thread is more on the arty or "dubstep guys got bored and made this" side of things..

If you wanna check out some UK Funky by original heads check out:

stuff from two or three years ago when the sound kinda broke out of london.

D Malice - Refix EP 12"
Geeneus - Volumes one 2x12"
Fuzzy Logik - Bangers and Mash vol 1 12"
Perempay and Dee - Buss It 12"
Roska - Climate Change 12"
Donaeo - African Warrior 12"
Tadow - Stressed Out 12"
DJ Naughty - Quicktime VIP 12"
Lil Silva - Funky Flex 12"
MA1 - Right Here 12"
R1 Ryders - Burnout ep 12"
Hard House Banton - Sirens ep 12"
DVA - Im Leaving 12"
DJ Mystery - Speechless 12"
Crazy Cousins - Inflation (from the Funky Anthem 12", that tune is so bad though!)
Crazy Cousin - Do You Mind 12"

That will do for now!

That Apple tune is proper good, shame it was so limited and is so rare now :(

A couple of my personals are Lil Silva - Different and Venom & Damage - Deeper, still praying for a release on that one
