Re: Inspiration

I watched a documentary about Danny Byrd and the making of his new album recently. Following his signing with Hospital he had a severe case of writers block that lasted from 2002-2005 where he literally didn't finish anything, it got to the point where the label was ready to drop him. The worst i've...

Re: Finding your identity as a producer.

My thoughts on having an 'Identity' as an Artist.. The way i see it your identity is the culmination and application of all the techniques you currently know. The little idiosyncrasies in the way you process sound. It's how you use and process drums, bass, leads, pads etc. Over the years you build up...

Re: Submotion Orchestra

Yeah, i'm a big fan. I saw them play last October and they were brilliant. They are all about the bass live, it's really gut wrenching and powerful. Ruby is a great front woman and has amazing vocal control, we had a chat with her afterwards and i was asking her about certain songs and who does what...

Re: Sounding like someone else.

I used to be that obsessed with having my own 'style' that I used to delete basslines, beats, anything that even remotely sounded like something i'd heard before. Now i couldn't care less, It's impossible to sound 100% original. We as producers just make slight variants of music that already exists.

Re: Production Resolutions for 2013?

1. Give 3 EP's away in 2013. First EP is already done and out being mastered ready for Januray. 2. Upgrade my Soundcloud to a paid one so i can send tunes to more groups and enable more downloads. 3. Sample more obscure/Weird stuff from various sources. 4. Promote my music/Connect with more fans. 5....

Giving away music

Is this a good route to go down? I have given away remixes in the past and had quite a bit of exposure though it and even had some remix work as a direct result. This time though i am thinking of giving away an EP via my Soundcloud. I have around 1200 followers so would send it them plus groups, You...

Yeah that is a good thing. I have the bog standard one so i just see play count, not who actually heard it.

Re: Adam A7X or F7

I bought a pair of Adam A5x's 3 months ago and they are the best monitors i've owned in my 15 years of producing. And i don't say that lightly because i am extremely picky about monitors. The woofer is smaller than the A7X'S at 5.5" and they go from 50hz upwards but i can handle that as i have ...

The Record Label

In the last 5 years I've had dealings with a few labels, had an EP, single releases & done a few remixes etc. One of those labels has just last week thrown in the towel due to poor sales and being unable to recoup mastering and promotional costs. This was a label that had 30 releases, had some w...

Re: Rolling off the high end..

Basically i do what you guys do, roll off hats around 17k. I don't want the high hats too prominent in the mix. Also on a tune i'm working on at the moment i used a notch filter on the hats around 4k to filter out something that i found to be ear fatiguing/annoying. I don't always do this but found ...

Re: how long did it take you guys?

been producing for 13 years now but my mixdowns were rubbish for years and years. A combination of crappy pc speakers, on- board soundcard ect didn't help but i never even knew or cared about 'mixdowns' for about 5 or 6 years. I was far too buy with ideas and just getting stuff down to be concerned ...

Re: What (in your opinion) makes a good mixdown?

For me a good mixdown would be clear definition frequency wise for bass, mid, tops. To be able to hear everything in the mix at low volume. Good use of stereo field/panning etc. Gain structure must be spot on and nothing too in your face, i,e snare/hi hats too loud.

Re: Do Old People Like Dubstep?

My mum likes it, she's 65. In the early-mid 90's she went to a few raves with us and even wrote a piece for Eternity magazine in 1995 as she is a journalist as well as a retired musician having toured Europe in the 60's 70's with bands so loud music/people off their faces is something she is very mu...

Re: Anyone honestly feeling Juke?

As far as production, I used to think the same thing about Dubstep. First time i heard Digital Mystikz i laughed at the production. sounded like a 10 year old made it, but i learned that's just their sound. Footwork is not badly produced, that's just how the sound is, if it changed it wouldn't be F...
