Re: Producing in 24 bit
Does higher bit-depth really give you more headroom? I can imagine having increased dynamic range and generally better quality but how can you get extra headroom above 0dB? And don't most most computers use 32bit for most arithmetic anyway so anything else is just treated as 32bit anyway?

Something like an overdrive unit then? Have you tried using heavy saturation?nowaysj wrote:more like dirtying without what we typically consider "distortion".
But yeah, you're unto my conundrum.

Re: Sound Destruction / Creation Vst's
So you're looking for a distortion unit - that isn't necessarily a distortion unit - that distorts things without actually distorting them?

Re: beep sounds
Buy Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 or Sins of a Solar Empire, and raid their audio banks. Video games have shitloads of cool menu beeps you can poach. (obviously you need PC versions. I reccomend getting Fallout New Vegas and sampling the robots. You get your beep sounds, and load of other post-appocalyptic st...

Re: why build a seprate sub bass if you can freq split
Hes right about the physics of subs, you have to realize your speakers are an oscillating object. Imaging if everytime your car pistons went to the top of the cylinder, they had to bounce up and down a bit before they came back down to rest. Yeah things will be more interesting I guess but shitll s...

Re: Actually making humanized sounds.
Yeah ok I think I get what you mean, I was just saying that especially with classically trained musicians the imperfections in their playing are almost undetectable and like you saidi it's more about the feel/swing/groove of the whole track rather than individual elements.

Re: why build a seprate sub bass if you can freq split
A pure sine wav will always rattle the subs more than a harmonically complex bass. It's basic physics - subs move much more easily with a pure sine than anything else so the reproduction will always be more true. This is why it's generally better to cut the sub bass from your sample/synth and repro...

Re: Actually making humanized sounds.
Depends on your style man. The music I'm making right now is meant to sound like orchestral film score stuff with metal/jazz drumming. It uses no artificial (synthesised) sounds and has an extreme swing on it. With that, pretty much everything needs to be dragged around. Maybe not with "normal...

Re: what do i do with this bass
Compress it if you don't feel like turning it down. I would turn it down it down then boost any frequencies that need to stand out but folks around here don't like boosting.

Re: happiness & creativity
I think I'm annoyed that you associate robot fights with brostep. Not sure why it annoys me but it really does, damn you. For me I'd stay happiness is fine for creativity, or at least doesn't hinder it, but stability tends to throw me off a bit. So whenever I feel like my life is stable I just slap ...

Don't just humanise shit for the sake of it, not everything needs to have minute imperfections in fact I'd say most things don't.

Re: Protools 9
I would of thought protools would be better if you had a lot of recording to do, not sure if it's worth it just for the audio features. Then again I've only scraped the surface with protools so I don't know. I would definitely reccomend Cubase for audio though even if it's just Cubase LE, always use...

Re: 2 FL questions
I have no experience pre FL 8 but there should be an automation folder in the sidebar that lets you manage any automation in the track so far (Then again I'm not even sure if there's a sidebar in FL 5) If FL 5 works for you then keep going with it, imo you should think about an upgrade. If you bounc...

Oh yeah, I just realised I answered a completely different question. Well it might still be useful for someone so I'll leave it there for now. I don't know nearly enough audio encoding to make a decent post on that so I'll leave it.

Re: MP3 Degradation, an experiment.
One of the best ways to understand why it's the treble that suffers most from low quality is to look at additive synthesis; most good additive synths will use as many harmonics as possible to give the most accurate approximation of a waveform. If we look at a square wave for example it doesn't take ...
