You could try using one of those programs that lets you draw/erase parts of the spectrum to pinpoint the sounds and cut them out. (similar to metasynth or whatevs) iZotope Rx is supposed to be really good with cleaning up audio, you might find some use in that too. ive had a play with it but havent...

its a good idea, definetly gonna have a stab at it,

eqing is best bet and it's gonna take patience from initial post sounded like you were trying to do diy acapellas i did try to do a DIY acapella before, ended up usin - what sounded like - someone elses in the end but even that didnt sound great so i cut it from my track! anyway, like i said i EQ'd...

I've been usin this noisegate called "floorfish" or something to try get some background noise out of this sample i've got, but it doesn't seem to work unless i crank it real high and then it sounds really jagged and starts cutting out the sound i want, i've tried playin round with it but ...

oh yeah i get ya.. damn, well, im lost what to do, i downloaded a limiter VST and have played around but cant get a clear tone for the vocals i wanted to use, i dont think getting said stems are possible though

Well it depends, often times the sounds themselves dictate their musical structure. In that case, the sound comes first and generates the music.
