Re: Question about music theory (harmonization)
How fast the harmony changes is entirely up to interpretation. You could reduce a whole song to a single cadence, or you could break down every quarter note into a new chord (A la Giant Steps) A popular jazz harmonization technique is taking a single chord and splitting it into two different chords...

Re: sidechain effect w/o kick drum
ive actually read that side chains do reply better to white noise than other samples becuase they use up a wider range of the frequency spectrum, and makes the side chain effect a bit more drastic from what ive noticed. What the fuck? Unless you're sidechaining using a multiband compressor with dif...

Re: Making room for all those melodies?
taek a chord progression, a few chords that sound good to you. Then voice them. Say your first chord was A minor, thats ACE. Now, you can invert the chord and play E in the bass A in the middle and C in the highest voice (soprano) if you'd like. Take that idea and run with it. Or you can take the sa...

I dunno. I was clicking through my friend's plugins cause he got the quad core card, and I don't think he can use any of them cause they're like $100 each on top of the $$$ for the card.SunkLo wrote:Doesn't UAD let you demo them?

Re: Where to learn basics about effects, etc?
who gives a shit It was a few years ago now, but i'm pretty sure thats what I was taught when studying Sound Production. An effect, or should i say 'effects', is something that is added, giving you two signals, dry and wet. Where as processing just changes the signal. Like as mentioned above, maybe ...

Re: Where to learn basics about effects, etc?
Thank you folks! I ordered both books "How to Make a Noise" and "Sound FX". That should be enough to get a good basic idea what's going on...I hope. that sound FX book is really a great read. I loaned it to a friend but I want it back now to learn more about reverb and distortio...

Re: Mastering, mixing, loudness war and college!?!?!
good mastering job can take a good mix and make it great, take a great mix and make it outstanding etc. but if your mix is shit then so will the 'mastered' version. so yes, fix it in the mix. and also what he said about song writing. some edm tunes are released without mastering...

d112 works for bass, U87s can work for overhead or ambient, sm57s can work on snares...It really depends on what you want for your sound. But it would be good to have a large diaphragm mic for kick...ahh hell its pretty pointless to try and explain what you should be reading about. It expensive mics...

thanks for that, looks a perfect companion for my knobless midi keyboard. I haven't had much luck with my axiom (the one with lots of knobs and faders).covertdubs wrote:I got one of these http://www.cme-pro.com/products-list/pr ... eam3X.html for £150 off eBay.

Re: Vinyl to PC recording with Focusrite Saffire?
I've answered this question in at least a couple of threads. A focusrite saffire (the one I have) is not ideal at all for recording off vinyl. The outputs from a mixer are line level, and the inputs on the focusrite small soundcards are designed for insturments or microphones. The preamp is to boost...

wow I was told a few years ago by someone- i think legendary, that CDJs don't have timestretching capabilities. mine don't cause I'm on old numarks, but seems like the newer pioneers do. damn. Also, I've seen this feature on some newer vinyl turntables. FWIW I find the free timestreching algorithm i...

Re: How to make sub-bass more persistent over mid-ranges?
so your subbass has to be louder just to sound equal to your midrange, depending on how loud you're listening (percieved loudness).
like other people are saying though, you can add harmonics. an quick way would be to push your sub hard into a limiter.

Re: The FIVE DOLLAR Studio (How to create music on the cheap
Lol I missed that. Hardly a $5 dollar studio tho, some headphones are also needed at least. If it's a desktop - a mouse and keyboard will cost more! Still some interesting ideas. I'd like to know some sound proofing ideas that are cheap, I need to get my room treated but don't want to spend a lot a...
