Some information on soundcards

A soundcard as you call it (or an audio interface) is definitely recommended. Since you're using a laptop I think an audio interface with USB connection would be a good idea. Maybe check out the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. It's not too expensive and probably good enough. There's a thread about soundcard...
