as saturators go i use cyanide2 (free) and the bundled ableton saturator (which i like a lot for some reason) exclusively

i find that saturation handles similar to compression in that you don't want to be using it on real noisy audio or deep bass

delete everything in the project that you aren't using, such as plugins that aren't doing anything or empty instrument channels you've abandoned. they all take up cpu load! certain plugins can be extremely cpu-heavy so try to see if there's one in particular that's hogging up your cpu time once you'...

are you sticking all your samples and VSTs on your SSD too?

i've been thinking of buying something small and cheap(er), putting the essentials on it and keeping the rest on spinners but i don't know if that will actually have much of an effect
