Could be the synth is totally fucked, and is sending note on's when it should be sending note off's.

yea it that's definitely possible, but the interface on the converter cable was lighting up when keys were pressed indicating that it it was receiving midi data.

But now the converter isn't ...

I got given an old roland hs-60 synth which is sort of broken. all the keys work it just makes some weird high pitched/distorted noises some times (this isn't certain keys, it just does it randomly.) which makes it pretty much impossible to play anything. However, i thought i would be able to use it ...
