@axolotl-dubstep: Have you tried using a high-shelf filter with a moderate resonancy? And use two notes an octave apart. A tube emulator type vst/effect could hep with the warmth, or you could just boost your mids and lower your treble with an EQ.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@i11icit, thelastthing: That's... not quite how it works, mate. :a: Humorous avatar, though. @OJ1s: I don't have anything to say; you sound like you have everything under control. It feels very relaxed. So far, so good! :) @InTheCrowd: I like the samples of the crowd; feels large and live at first, ...

Re: How To Make This Sound - January 2012
@Canonmusic: I started fresh this time, and I think I got a bit closer. The lofi/bitcrush helped a tad, and I made a synth in unison, an octave up. Listen here. @Klesherdubs: Midrange saw, unison, into a low-shelf filter with high resonance + comb filter, somewhere around maybe 15 Hz + shallow choru...

Re: How To Make This Sound - January 2012
I couldn't say, as I use neither. But, lo-fi is kind of a standard effect in most DAWs, so it's probably in Ableton already. If not, just find a simple bitcrush vst. Maybe add a tube emulator. When I return home, I'll try to get closer to the sound.

Re: How To Make This Sound - January 2012
@antman: If I'm understanding you correctly, the easiest way would be to add a third to your oscillator rack. Notching a frequency always helps, as does formant boosting/cutting. Also, a very short delay, working as a basic comb filter, could work. There also seems to be a cabinet simulator type eff...

Re: How To Make This Sound - January 2012
@RevIllusion: Welcome to DSF! So, that synth sounds like saws and movement. So take a couple saw waves an octave apart, and add a sine wave an octave below (for depth and distortion muddling; lower notes eat a lot of headroom and generate nice harmonics and affect the way distortion interacts with t...

Re: How To Make This Sound - January 2012
@rezto-dubz: You already have it -- pitch automation, likely with multiple voices. Kind of like an organ, in that regard, so you could just find an organ vst and have at it. Or synthesize it... So get two oscillators (I like saws but sines can work -- experiment!) and add a fifth (e.g. D3, D4, and A...

Re: panning/stereo spreading and your mixing methods?
I like to record two vocal tracks, and hard pan them to opposite sides. Or for incidental effects, I have a bit of spread on them to help them stand out more. I generally don't spread the midrange, but hats/cymbals get panned sometimes, depending on the song. For example, a lot of times, drum fills ...

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@dogmancar: Raise the drums or lower the piano; the former feels a little drowned out, even though a strong piano is desirable. Were the drums recorded on separate tracks, or just one track? If possible, get a bit more punch on them, and a fair bit of reverb as well, so it sounds like its huge and s...

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@C_E_S: I feel like this is an instance where a nice reverb would sit perfectly on the sub. I dig the percussion -- especially that delayed hit at :04 that pops up now and again. Likewise, a touch of extra reverb on the drums would expand the space of the track, make it feel even more enveloping. Li...

Re: What do you consider a remix?
It depends on your intent. If the idea was just looking for vocals to add something to your track or fill it in a little, it's not a remix, as you're not intending to build onto a pre-existing work. I'd say that you can claim the track as your own, as you've built something entirely creative. I don'...

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@Globalz: That sidechain compression is a bit too intense. The first pad also feels a little too resonant, although I like the airy feeling it gives. The pitch-bent bass is nice as well; the only thing I'd suggest would be to add a slight volume modulation alongside the filter, to bring some dynamic...

Re: Metallic Hats/OpenHats (Shakers?)
As above; a quick way to make metallic shakers is to start from a metallic source, like cymbals. So, you'd take one, cut it short, and fade it in. Then copy that, but add a slightly softer attack and harder release. Or put pence/pennies in an aluminum can and record yourself shaking it. Then effect ...

Re: Harsh kicks?
I don't see a problem with harshness in your kick. If anything, it could use a bit of top-end, if only to keep track of it during those occasional rolls -- right now, it's a bit muffled and dark. Compared to your sub, it is a bit loud; just lower it by a few decibels and you'll be okay, I feel. Or r...

;_; I'm out. For what it's worth, my track was Floor Plan A. Lots of fun this competition was, however; can't wait to do it again.

Re: 48 HR FIRST ROUND OVER, SECOND ROUND LINK INSIDE
Yeah, lolicore is still alive and well, even if I'm not contributing at the moment. Goreshit, Lolishit, Reizoku CJ, and odaxelagnia have been doing some novel things lately, but I haven't heard much from Yuri Yum Yum or Shimau recently (May-ish, mind). I might start making lolistep again; not sure i...

Re: Signature sound
IMHO: Another thing; signature sounds aren't always about timbre and tone, like Santana's guitar work or Fieldy's bass slapping. They can also be about feel and technique. Kromestar doesn't use the exact same hats in all of his tracks, but I could tell a track was made by Kromestar because of the wa...
