Re: Skrillex reveals details on how he makes his basslines
Hey guys, I barely come on this forum, but after reading through most of this thread (lots of great ideas) I thought I would make and share this little video. It's more of a suggestion then anything, at how simple a formant type of bass sound can be, hopefully it gives you some ideas. http://www.yo...

Re: So it looks like im gonna HAVE to learn ableton.
dont worry about clip view. or clips. other people may say something different, but trust me, if you want to just jump right in and get in a solid workflow, just use arrangement view. if you want to look at the mixer only you can use tab to switch back and forth between the two views. ableton is not...

@rando
are you modulating operators against each other to create formant movement?
care to elaborate?

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
i think this was mentioned before... but in case not.... dont use the formant presets... you can use them as a reference point to get an idea about how your eq peaks should look. but it should be fairly obvious that you probably need some of those other frequencies that those presets are cutting out...

Re: Had a crack at remaking First of the Year by Skrillex
i think having something that plays the same notes as something you are familiar with tricks your brain into thinking "it sounds close"
certainly not a bad effort, and not a bad bass patch, but doesnt sound anything like the orig track other than using the same notes...
just my 2 cents.

Re: knife party spacial processing/verb?
looking like the answer is actually NON convolution reverb. super small room size, lots of early reflections... testing this using sonnox oxford reverb on my drums and bass right now and sounding awesome. going to add the mix buss as well.

knife party spacial processing/verb?
this has really got me thinking today.... how are they doing the spacial processing on these track? is it just a really good reverb? if you listen to all the bass/synths you can hear that they almost sounds like the top end is "closed". also, in the same way that drums or vocals can sound ...

Re: Getting the womps to sound PERFECT
Fuck knows why it sounds better lower down. I'll be completely honest and say FM8 baffles me in many ways. Just experimenting and fucking about has led me to get my own workflow of making noises in it. One thing I did find though is that its hard to get the filter settings bang on. I was messing wi...

i hope you realize this is like some kid in a garage metalcore band hearing dubstep for the first time and then posting on here asking how can he make those awesome growls like skrillex. go here http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/production-tips-449/ and dont post this same thing unless you want 435...

Re: Getting the womps to sound PERFECT
Disagree, FM8 is sick for making devastating womps, wubs and wobbles!! literally dancefloor smashing sounds! Get your head in the filter, its a tough nut to crack but works very well. Only assign the LFO by about 30 on it I find. You can also LFO the oscillators themselves. You can do some really f...

Re: playing up to cdj 2000? is it any different?
the 2000s feel a tad different than 1000s and way different than any other cdjs. the display menu can be a little confusing, i would actually recommending downloading the manual just to familiarize yourself with it, and also watch a couple of youtube vids on them so you arent surprised when you walk...

Re: Getting the womps to sound PERFECT
no i dont know what its about then.. because it seems to that its just the cool thing for the "real" dubstep producers to talk shit about. just like how everyone on DOA used to talk non stop shit about pendulum and their snares and synths. yes its annoying to have a million questions about...

Re: Getting the womps to sound PERFECT
wtf is with every anti-brostepper having a hissy fit when they hear the name skrillex even mentioned :6: yes we all get it, you are too cool to like skrillex. as for the OP quest for perfect wompage... FM8 has SICK envelopes, plus a much steeper learning curve than massive... so here are my (ableton...

filter morphing/advance bass tips for FM8??
i feel like have a decent grasp on FM synthesis, but after countless hours of trial and error in FM8, im still struggling with getting anything usable out of this beast. currently im getting way more out of operator just because of the ease of the filter/lfo, but i feel like there are some gnarly fi...

Re: Skrillex reveals details on how he makes his basslines
it certainly doesnt need to be FM8. the growl example i posted is Massive. the main advantage of using FM8 (or any FM synth) is that its easy to generate a lot of harmonics quickly. but at the end of things, it doesnt matter too much what your source synth is if you understand the HOW/WHY of the end...

Re: Skrillex reveals details on how he makes his basslines
yo rudebrat. solid input. you touched on several things that i think are key aspects to this sound. putting a limiter at the end of the chain is essential... i like your idea of automating different distortions quite a bit. and yep, huge notches cut out of the mids is def a big part of getting a gro...
