Re: The Dubstep Production Bible (updated 2009-06-03)

Seeing as mastering isn't there, I did a short tut on a particular subset of mastering for my Uni work, written as a guide. I will probably do some more later. If OP wants to transplant it into an article on here, or include it in his own article on mastering when it arrives later I'd be happy to le...

Re: Having trouble getting sub to audible frequency.

DISCLAIMER: If you make DMZ style dark subby dub records then all of this does not apply, as the definition of a good master is not the same as it is for a typical dubstep/EDM record. That is a typical dubstep record No it's not. That is not what I mean. Even when going back to the days before bros...

Re: DJs these days

It says so in the replies, I'm just trying to find out now if there's any truth to it right now.

EDIT: was kinda trying to put it out as a theory to move the convo toward that

Maybe something like these:

Re: Making music OTB

If you want something that's a more tactile version of ITB I would not go with an MPC. It's the completely opposite end of the spectrum where all you work with is samples. You will find it very limiting. Try something like a Korg Kronos. At least then you will still have some non-destructive effects...

Re: How essential is a Sub-Woofer for Mixdowns?

To be frank, you actually mix better on smaller speakers for a bunch of reasons. Without bass traps a sub will pretty much make most rooms a lot worse, so you will literally be better off without the sub most of the time, or with the thing turned off. Your 5" speaker cones are lighter if they a...

Btw, just to counter the last 5 pages of commentary, actually Laidback (the DJ in the middle) has IEM's on.

Wireless in ear headphones. You can see em when he turns his head.

Re: Having trouble getting sub to audible frequency.

I would follow the stuff about harmonics more than the stuff about ignoring the guys with poor speakers for two reasons. 1. In an untreated room with bad room modes, it will be hard for an ear to pitch just a sub, however adding a harmonic to it will make that much easier. 2. Many people (read DJ's,...

Re: Yamaha psr 1500 keyboard/sequencer?

It has drums in it so I'd sample them even if they suck, same with any interesting patches. Then sell it, it's digital anyway so having the sample in many ways is the same as having the keyboard itself. It'll probably make someome quite happy but to a producer it's limited in most of the ways that c...

Re: Sub bass out of 808 - adding some mid frequencies

Overcompression or driving it through a limiter are two ways to achieve a level of distortion out of it, else you are looking at tape emulations and saturation. http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2011/04/24/bpb-freeware-studio-best-free-tapetubeanalog-saturation-vst-plugins/ Have a look there for somet...

Re: Does exporting do anything/

MP3 only works in 16bit anyway so when you convert to MP3 you WILL get 16bit, even on 320s. Other than that, it's pretty much all been explained, truncation and all.the good thing is the truncation happens at the last stage so actually the damage being done is in the nature of going from the high qu...

Re: Mixing trap kick vs dubstep kick

@Wolf It comes from that but it's not all that really. Trap has much more emphasis on stacking kicks. You want to either tune your topkick to your sub pitch, or if you are following a melody with your bottom kicks you wanna high pass the sub from the top. Your style will determine whether you keep yo...

Re: Alchemist

Just keep in mind Arcane, it's not really a synth, it's a rompler with a few controls that reach into the sample itself, but it's sample based and doesn't take any homegrown samples. For this reason I don't own a copy, but my school and work had it. The samples are nice, but again, more tweak-abilit...

In agreement with Andy here. mix is clean as F, panning is really nice. Rhythm is nice and bumpin, can't really complain at all.

I have that regularly. It comes and goes in waves. Sometimes everything I churn out is soo awesome (I feel like I'm like that right this second) but for the last 2 years of study I made like 3 serious tunes all year and they were all shit, mainly because over the course of the same years I had to ma...
