Re: I need a reference point. What constitutes a good mix?
edit: @Redderious: Didnt see one of your posts. When you talk about bassnectar, can you give some examples? I'm a huge fan and I guess im a little embarrassed to say I thought wildstyle EP (at least 808, wilstyle method and Yes (although not in the EP i think) were all really good...) Even compared ...

Re: I need a reference point. What constitutes a good mix?
@ Tosker: Thanks for the lengthy and honest replies. Its good to get some guidance as well as your perspectives on this as I work with a small company that share a very different vision. Its basically run by this guy who made it big enough in boston to get a pretty nice stream of gigs in well known ...

Re: How do I know what key things are in?
I guess I could just do the spectrum analyzer... I guess I'm thinking too much into it... but whenever I make a drum pattern, shit just does NOT sound good at all. It sounds very robotic, quantized and.... well crap. I cant seem to make it sound good, let alone "realistic" Ill refer to the...

How do I know what key things are in?
Lets say I sample the drums from Aliens by Figure. How do I know what key anything is in? (Sub, Kick, Snare, Hat, etc) Moreover, if I just take a sample from the song and am trying to layer it with drums of my own production, how do I know what key my drums are in? How do I make them fit without key...

Re: I need a reference point. What constitutes a good mix?
@tosker: Now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense to go see, say Datsik, for his music rather than his mixes. Clearly, they get away with it because I recently saw Skrillex live, and he cannot mix for his life, but either the people dont care or they dont mind it. Anyway, I've been DJing for ...

Re: I need a reference point. What constitutes a good mix?
Thanks Tosker for the great reply. I needed to hear this from another person because I thought I was losing my mind. I do agree with you that mixes #1 and 2, and parts of 3 all are very LINEAR (a great way to describe the mixing techniques). My questions is though, can these people, in the context o...

I need a reference point. What constitutes a good mix?
While working on a few mixes of my own, I have having the hardest time distinguishing between what a good and bad mix is suppose to sound like... Taking a few examples.... 1. Excision X volumes mix - I think extremely clean and crisp with good flow (I dont hear key clashes and any abrupt transitions...

Re: Imagination (Willy Wonka) Bassnectar Remix
Actually, on another note. Any idea how he removed the vocals from Kelis - Brave (Gemni remix)? From what I know, its virtually impossible to take out the vocals from a song unless you have the file itself.

Imagination (Willy Wonka) Bassnectar Remix
I heard this at his show in boston the other night. He opened with this tune and it was perfect. Anyone know whether he has a file out or whether its one of "tour arsenals"

Re: I need some guidance (very new), read resources on this
Wow thanks for the great replies! I'll just keep trying, learning and researching. Summers coming up and I dont know what else i need to be doing. I just wanted to conceptually ground myself a bit more so I didnt feel like a space cadet trying to figure things out. Ill post my progress, but thanks i...

I need some guidance (very new), read resources on this site
Hey guys, Ive DJed for a year or so but its getting stale especially because I rarely get to play music I care about, so I decided to dip my feet into producing. I know the very basics when it comes to producing, and I have myself a MPK49, ableton 8 live and Massive. Ive been experimenting for a cou...
