Tightening up your bands will also help clean up the sound. Try to pick precise bands in your sound to distort. No sense distorting shitty fuzz and artifacts.

Yeah Spectrasonics (Atmosphere or Omnisphere) or Absynth are the way. It's possible with Massive but it's not as good because it wasn't made for that kind of sounds. :a: You can make any sound with any synth. Yeah... That's just not true though. Every synth has his own wavetables, his own filters, ...

Ive had good dungeon growl results with two detuned square OSCs. A little automated distortion and an automated eq boost in the higher freqs. Then some verb and delay. Presto. 18th century dungeon noise.
