Yeah Spectrasonics (Atmosphere or Omnisphere) or Absynth are the way. Ive had good dungeon growl results with two detuned square OSCs. A little automated distortion and an automated eq boost in the higher freqs. Then some verb and delay. Presto. 18th century dungeon noise.
