Re: Need advice on Sub Bass
My Sub is usually just a separate channel away from all the other bass parts, so it's not even in the same group (nor the same rack.) 90% of the time it's usually just a sine wave playing the same notes as my mid/high bass (usually an octave lower but again, that's personal choice) lightly sidechai...

Re: The lowest pitch that can be well represented on a syste
Belt/servo motor driven loudspeakers.. Get to destroy your vital organs and house. Think those things are supposed to reach like 120dBspl at 17hz without any crazy amps. Doesn't have standard coil/magnet, instead it just pushes and pulls the diaphragm with a motor  17hz 120 SPL?! What the actu...

Re: The lowest pitch that can be well represented on a syste
Yeah I always keep the sub between F (42hz) and F (84hz). Sometimes if I have space for it I'll double it up an octave or saturate it for the benefit of crappy speakers.

Re: The lowest pitch that can be well represented on a syste
From what I've heard/experienced:
Average System = 42hz
Small system (laptops, phones, computer speakers) = about 80 hz.
Club System = 20hz
Average System = 42hz

Re: One does not simply loudness.
Can I benefit from gently compression on the whole mix? There is a tab in izotope ozone called dynamics. Basically I believe that is multiband compression, limiting and gate. The default setting is compressor on -10dB (ratio 1), gate on -80dB (ratio 1) and limiter on 0dB (ratio 10) for each band. C...

Re: One does not simply loudness.
You can do some really amazing things by smartly saturating. I recall a track I was messing around with where I saturated a snare sample, and was able to turn it down more than 10db while maintaining the same perceived volume. It kinda sounded like white noise, tbh. But it worked for the song in que...

This resonates with me. It's always a struggle with me to internalize my technical know-how so that it can get out of the way of my creativity. The more I learn, the less creative my tracks become.fragments wrote:music producers have become technicians in a factory building widgets.

Re: One does not simply loudness.
Dynamics or dynamic range is just the difference in amplitude between the lowest and highest peaks. i.e. a squashed mix will have it's lowest peaks way higher than a non squashed mix, thus having less dynamic range. Amplitude, in this case measured by dBFS does not equal loudness. It's only a relat...

Re: Question on EQ cutting or shelving
In FL studio's parametric EQ2 I've seen others take the first band (low shelf), bring it down all the way, then move to where they want to cut. The practice I use is to make the first band a high pass and move to where desired. Does my way cut out too many frequencies? That depends, do you want to ...

Re: Subbass pissin' me off.
A lot of people might disagree, but sometimes I saturate my sub a little in parallel so it can be heard on smaller systems. I love your name by the way.GangstaFish wrote:Not even a little distortion or anything?antman wrote:

Re: When writing a song what's the first thing YOU go to?
Sometimes I start with saw waves and make a chord progression and lead and go from there and sometimes I start from some sound or rhythm I've designed. If you have FL studio here's a fun one: make a chord progression and melody, and run them through gross beat, change gross beat to the momentary pat...

This would probably be more enticing if it didn't read like a salesmans canned responses. Just be fucking real. like: "Yo, me and 2 buddies are working on a drum and bass project. We've got our music theory down pat, but realized we could use someone who's stronger with drums" Things you'v...

Re: New d&b outfit seek 4th member - paid position
I don't understand how this is a part time wages thing. Are you hiring a studio engineer/musician? or are you bringing a 4th member in as a partner? And you haven't provided any form of credentials or portfolio? This smells like a shafting waiting to happen.

Holy shit that's embarrassing even as a reader. Hey wub, can you make that a preset for me? Turning knobs is hard. On second thought, can you just arrange that into a song for me? I'll just go ahead and put my name on it.

Yes, it's the same thing but on one insert. I usually use it myself for parallel, but I just wanted to be consistent throughout the video.

New one on compression. I start by explain compression as best I can, then demonstrate some practical applications for compression. 1) Controlling a live performance 2) Punchyness for drums 3) Parallel/Compression 4) Buss Glue 5) Enhancing Reverb 6) Sidechaining with 2 examples https://www.youtube.c...
