Re: How much music theory do i need to know?
A perfect cadence will always sound final; the 7th will always lead in to root, the minor third will always sound more dissonant than the major third when in harmony with root, moving a triad chord up or down a half tone in sequence will always sound spooky/magical. These aren't so much things we h...

Re: Creating "warm" synths
Some people hate this advice, but get yourself a nice warm analogue synth or an analogue filter. Is easiest way to get warm and cozy. N.b. some analogue is warmer than other analogue. Some analogue is very good at warm but not much good at anything else. They're all different recipes so if you go do...

I don't really do glitch hop but I like glitch processes. Basically.... embrace artifacts. Mess around... I dunno. He he he.

Re: Ways to get your track louder!
Haven't read whole thread, but it's enough to say that loudness is a complex thing. For a start, loudness =/= amplitude. The former is perceptual, the latter is physical. They correlate to some extent but are not the same. In particular, this means that increasing average amps closer towards 0 is a ...

Re: Acoustic treatment, finishing off bedroom studio.
Haven't read the entire thread and I don't know how far you are along OP. But I'll chime in and say a lot of money can be saved here with DIY treatment. It's one of the few aspects of a studio you can do really well entirely by yourself. Start with bass traps - quite easy to make, and they absorb so...

Re: Processing and mixing drums
Get it sounding big and fat to begin with (*if that's what you're after). Then try to have them as exposed as possible... no point in getting it sounding good then masking it over with something else - this is especially true of the kick, where bass frequencies are at a premium because of their ener...

Re: How much music theory do i need to know?
I come from a classical music background and that's been interesting for the way it's affected my production. But I really believe it's more a matter of diving in and getting started, even if you've got no formal training. The key is the number of hours you're prepared to spend - this is what is rea...

Re: Production skills/knowledge...
Ok, I'm just wondering... I've been producing various styles of electronic music for a little less than a year. I know I've gotten better than when I first started, but I feel as if I should be better than I am now.Take a listen at a few tunes by me, the tracks in this set are ordered Oldest→Newest...

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
@Praxisaxis: Some neat sound design and ambiences you have going on. The mixing sounds okay and the basses sound great (would be interested in what synth/fx you used for them). I'd like to hear all these tracks in full man, stuff is sounding ace! Overall the production value sounds awesome and liek...

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
Thanks for the feedback... yeah these are just segments of entire tracks, so structurally they don't make much sense in that clip. It's funny you don't like the 2nd one... it seems to polarise people - I've had other people say they love it, but yeah it's very off-kilter and wonky. I'll take that ab...

Re: sidechaining the snare
Yeah this is a great way to get body. I also like to put a gate after the reverb, so that it cuts off at a designated length.- Adding some reverb (or a quick delay) to a snare can improve the sound quality.

Re: Sampling from youtube and other sources
Problem with using low quality digital samples is that the problems tend to multiply through phases of processing.... e.g. even though a sample from Youtube (or whatever) might sound good in your mix, if you upload it it gets converted again... this process seems to compound and accentuate existing ...

Re: sidechaining the snare
Punchy snares were never a problem when people still had lots of headroom to work with. These days we want it all loud, loud, loud. So we can't allow the snare to jump out too much. This is why a snare will sound fine, even really good, by itself, and thin and brittle when mixed in with everything e...

Re: Dubstep Tips for first-timer?
OP, why not ask a specific question? It's like wondering about how to get good at judo. Nobody's going to give you a response which will enable you to become good at it all of a sudden. Like with any music, most of us spend years on it before we get any good. Some people are quicker, but in all like...

Re: adding "grain" and "warmth" to a mix
Analogue and the associated processes are important... (and not too expensive these days). But I'm finding more and more source material from real environments - either what you've recorded yourself or from a record - is important to get depth. E.g. reamp a synth- - run it out into an amp in a room,...

Re: Adding movement to your sounds?
I've read bits and pieces of this thread... all good advice. Here's my 2 cents (may already be in here). * Dynamics... if you like to smash your limiter that's fine, but then try to put some elements of space in your arrangement , so that it's not loud loud loud all the time, because that is essenti...

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
OK here's one from me... this is just "selections" from tunes from an EP I'm working on (song titles are labelled in the comments). I'm trying to make it sorta sci-fi, narrative music evoking a steampunk theme - so more for listening than dancing I guess. It's not really dubstep but shares...
