Hey all, do any of you guys just manually record drum patterns via a midi controller, etc. Or do you click in the patterns?

I understand basic music theory, but I'm unable to apply to a song. How do the random synths come in to play with the chords I am using? For example Mord and his riffs. I can make those chords, but not add a little melodic riff or nice effects on top.

How does Skrillex use his sounds then apply them to music theory? For example the growling bass in Scary Monsters. This is a block I'm coming to in producing.
