Re: Granular Synthesis in Main Stream Music!
Yeah, Bon Iver use quite a few techniques that you normally don't hear in "mainstream" music, one of the reasons why I love them. But then again, they aren't really all that mainstream yet, they've really only blown up in popularity in the past couple years.

Re: Creating synths with the sound qualities of real instrum
Physical modelling synthesis is one of those things that sounds good on paper, but doesn't always yield good results (at least, that's been my experience with physical modelling synths thus far). As was mentioned before, lots of modulation is key to organic sounding instruments, but it's also ...

Nice track! Kinda has a James Blake-meets-SBTRKT kinda feel to it
Lovely artwork too! Keep up the great work!

Re: Attempt at dubsteppy moombah/trap
I like it! I feel like the mixing could be a tad more crisp though, there are moments where the drums don't quite cut though like they should (but those moments are relatively few, so don't sweat it). Great job!

Artifiseer - Blown Fuse (Ambient/Experimental/Minimal)
Hi! I'm starting a new musical project, under the moniker Artifiseer, focused mostly on experimental, ambient-ish, electronic music. This is my first track as part of this new project:

Re: "Chillstep" bass?
For a sub bass, all you really need is a sine wave or, if you want more harmonics, a low-passed square or triangle (low-passed down to somewhere between 100 and 250 hz, depending on your taste). Then, you can add some saturation and compression if you like, but it's not always necessary. Just trust ...

Re: "Brostep" Drum Samples
Well, aside from vengeance, there's prime loops, loopmasters, etc., but they sound more or less similar to vengeance. If you're looking for free samples, you're better off layering and processing them yourself. It's a pain, but it's worth it. Doesn't take that long either, I've only been messing ...

Re: Reaper anyone?
Gotta love how someone merely mentions torrents or "pirated software" and everyone gets pissy. I'm not ashamed to say that I torrented my first DAW and a few plugins when I first started producing. I ended up liking the products so much, I bought them. Just because someone downloads things ...

I disagree, I think it was nice of the OP to share this, I personally, found it to be quite interesting. Nothing wrong with knowing all the theory behind a process we all use; knowledge is power!

Well, this thread is going to to hell pretty quickly, so let's just get back to growls, shall we?

Re: Can you Sidechain a EQ point?
You could probably do something similar to that with automation, but the effect probably wouldn't sound much different than if you were using sidechain compression, except the pumping that occurs during sidechain compression would be reduced. Honestly, I think the best way to mix kick and sub is to ...

Keeping resampled basses clear & crisp?
I've been messing around lately, trying to spice up my bass sounds through resampling, but I can't seem to achieve the desired effect. After a couple resamples, the sound starts to turn to mush, and it only gets worse from there. To those that have had success with crazy FX chains and resampling ...

Gated drums: yay, or nay?
Alright, so I'm currently working on a project that makes heavy use of gating effects on the drum buss. Now, I like how it sounds, but I'm curious to hear the general consensus on gating effects. Not to decide whether or not to keep them, just to whet my curiosity. So, how do you feel about the use ...

Problems working with long audio files?
So, recently I've been experimenting with drones and ambient synths and such, and one of my favourite new toys has been paulstretch. Problem is, I like to stretch the audio out to fairly long values (like 30 mins or more). Audacity will load these long files fine, but when I try to import them into ...

Re: Quick 'Self-Mastering' Question (FL Studio - Ozone 5)
Yes, focusing on getting the mix right is, in the long run, more important than mastering anyway, and will save you A LOT of time. :)
and yes, to those that mentioned it, I realize my post just made things seem more complicated. The only purpose of it was to give a rough example proving that you ...

Re: Quick 'Self-Mastering' Question (FL Studio - Ozone 5)
That's because mastering is more than just a little bit of limiting. Try using all of Ozone's modules, it's the combination of all of them together that yield nice masters. I like to use a combination of some stock FL plugins, Ozone, and Pro-L for my masters. Here's an example of my mastering chain ...

Re: What effects to put on Master Channel?
I find mixing into a little bit of EQ, some subtle saturation or distortion and a little bit of compression is a good way to go. It adds a little more colour to the mixdown without taking away much of the dynamics, win-win!
