I don't think I'm familiar with multi-timbral pads. Care to elaborate?

I noticed my mixes tend to sound a little thin and hissey otherwise, on all systems I test no just my phones. I guess I could LP higher and focus on making the elements themselves have less high end, but idk it stlll sounds good this way

Does cutting certain frequencies somehow boost others?

I have my mix HP at 26hz and LP:at 16kHz.I sometimes load professional tunes in Ableton to reference how elements should sit in a mix in relation to each other, but when I did it was peaking at about 2.5db over. I knew this couldn't be right, so I checked to make sure it wasn't routed to any sends a...

Writing a tune and mixing down on different systems?

I have headphones I use for mixing, and though their frequency response seems fine, I noticed that if I write tunes while listening on them and then mix down on them as well, my mixes didn't sound nearly as good on other systems (ipod earbuds, car stereo, etc) The volumes of some elements are too qu...

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.

FL is terrible in a lot of other capacities. Having to route instruments to tracks is a pain in the dick, and having to scroll that little pattern selector to try and find a clip you're looking for? Eugh. It reminds me of all the bad aspects of having to patch together hardware boxes. It's got a fe...

Can't you just run Sytrus as a VSTi in Ableton?
Oh yeah, i guess I could lol. Still, i'll check out some tuts

Looking to get into FM synthesis.

I've read several time that is is best to learn one or two synth inside and out, so my first choice was Massive, and I'd say it was a good one to start with. I love the ability to map different automation styles to almost anything, and I feel pretty comfortable with it by now, but I've heard lot of ...

Mixing down a clap

Im having a real tough time getting the clap right in the mix. To get it sounding like I want, it just gobbles up headroom, even going above 0 when I'm trying to keep it at or below -3db. I turned it down to levels consistent with everything else, but by that point the thing is almost inaudible in t...

Ive made some decent (not great, but decent) growls using Operator. Better than anything I can get out of Massive

So I'm going to start playing out at the end of the summer

My friend's 21st is this August, and he asked me if I could play a set there. I obviously said yes. However, I've only ever produced stuff and haven't played out, but I will dammit! I'm dedicating this summer to acquiring the skills/equipment needed to play a decently entertaining set. I just have a...

Re: Sounds are perfect, notes are fine, but somethings missi

I once had this same problem. What I did was make a little arpeggio out of 1/16th notes in the key of the track, then I high passed, added a subtle chorus effect, and some reverb. In the mix, I made it pretty quiet, almost to the point where you can't hear it if you weren't listening for it. It real...

Track sounds different after exporting

Every time I export a track, I hear something I don't like mix-wise, so I go back and fix it. But after the 3rd or so time I did it, I A/B tested the exported track with the one still in Ableton, and the exported one didn't have enough mid, an the crashes were way too loud and hissy. It didn't sound...

I one time made a synth for an arpeggio, and I had a filter and the oscillator's amp mapped to the same envelope. It was pretty cool.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread

Has anyone found a key/note that they find difficult to make a growl for? I'm doing a remix of a track in A# and i'm having a hard time making a good growl for it. One octave sounds too high and thin, and the one below it is way too low and just sounds muddy. I've made a couple halfway decent ones a...

Massive sound "thin" to anyone else?

I love how LFOs can be mapped to absolutely anything, but the sounds themselves can sometimes be almost meek IMO. I've gotten growlier bass sounds out of Operator. Even the presets on it don't seem that great. Do I just need to process the crap out of it? Or am I missing something?
