That is probably the coolest synth on the outbreak ep. I agree with start with a good sample. You can't make a killer snare with a crap sample. Try layering claps, toms, white noise. high pass below the fundamental, boost the fundamental. I think it's more important that the kick/snare sounds good, rather than be in tune. Tuning your kick to the same key as your song may not always be good, as it will likely be competing with all the other elements playing the same note quite often. Best sub bass advice I've read is to low cut everything, use a pure sine, have it sit a few DB under the bass.
