I've never really done this as I just tend to pick a kick which doesn't interfere with the bass. How the fuck, though, do you do it with plugin compressors on, say, cubase? Arrgh I can't figure it out.

Aye, it's counterproductive to try and restrict access to a scene. Hopefully this is a sign of recognition on the NME's part that they've been banging on about the same old crap for years and are bucking their ideas up. I ain't holding my breath, mind.

I don't think it has to sound evil, but I generally like music that sounds detatched and alien, like it wasn't made by humans. Imagine hearing '...meets rockers uptown' when it came out. Would've been pretty scary.

Get what you're saying about the mp3 thing, but it's two-sided: people can hopefully access weirder stuff which might otherwise be denied immediate exposure.
