scooping kick frequencies between say 200 and 1000 can make the kick sound cleaner as well, which to me translates into punchy. There is a good tutorial based in FL about this by imageline. I do like to have a mid keyboard to mess with melodies, easily trial different chords, etc. I can't play the keyboard, but i've now had the midi controller for a few years and if I produce with it off I feel like my hands are chopped off. It's just easier to play different sounds rather than mousing...
