well, if you're mixing in software on the computer you need a limiter plugin. if you're mixing on a hardware mixer, then you'd need an outboard limiter. does that make sense? it's hard to give a better answer without knowing your setup...

along with proper compression, you may also want to consider using a limiter on your master bus...this basically keeps the mix from clipping/distorting.

another vote for the AKGs...they work well for me and are very comfortable.
