If you spend the time during the production then you shouldn't have to master your tunes much. There is no point taking your final .wav and then running it through T-Racks because it's not going to sound much better. That's not mastering that's fucking bollocks straight up SIMPLEBIMPLE.

I think its more likely that its the inexperience of the producers making these particular tracks.

Oh and the macbook is just as good as a macbook pro when it comes to processing power in the studio. Only downside is the size of the screen. Just be sure to get plenty of memory.

I use a macbook with logic 7 - but i output onto a 24inch widescreen LCD and i have a firewire outboard sound card.
