Re: Describe it in 3 sentences: Compression

Make. Shit. LOUDER! No, it doesn't, not in essence. The makeup stage may bring this in, but what a compressor actually does is reduce peaks, so your signal sits at a more steady level that can be mixed/controlled. Compression cuts the volume of a signal that crosses above a certain threshold by a s...

Re: Online Distribution

Had a look at official.fm, it seems to be it's own base of distribution, it's own shop right?

@ Wub, I had never heard of Fanu, but I've been listening to his stuff on Bandcamp all day, his stuff is absolutely mint.

Re: Interference and/or power noise?

I don't know how your plugs work over in Freedom-land, but usually across the pond you can get away with just removing the ground connection or 'lifting the ground' as the term mentioned above. That is 100% a ground loop problem that you have there though. Are you using a balanced cable to connect f...

Re: Online Distribution

That was quite daft of me to miss off Bandcamp from that post. Personally, I've never used it, but then nor have I have Tunecore or that other one, and I most likely never will. I teach MT, so it's something students tend to look at quite a lot so I'm just looking for more opinions. Anything is poss...

Online Distribution

Hi all, Apologies if this is the wrong area for this, if the mods could move it if so it would be appreciated! Whilst this isn't something directed straight at production, I think it's something some people will be interested in and something that I wouldn't mind starting a discussion about. I'm sur...

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!

@mthrfnk (prev page) - Lovely intro, I love the soundscape and the panning going off with it, I turned to the right as I thought someone was talking to me in the office! When the snare comes in it does seem a little bit too loud for me, though when everything else drops in it sounds spot on and the ...

Re: Best beginner software?

I'd say give the Reason demo a go, or maybe get the lite version. I personally think it's a great introduction into the music tech world. It has decent arrangement tools with good shortcuts, helps you get your head around routing and also lets you fuck about with synths, which face it, that's what w...

Re: Quick Questions about Master Bus Plugins

if your a/b ing with a mastered track, turn the mastered down, not yours up This this this this this this this. Fullness as you call it will be made at the mixing stage. If the ME is having to add fullness to your track then there probably a problem with the mix to begin with. QFT I hate the idea o...

Re: Mastering Questions That Still Confuse Me

For christs sake, burn a reference track (a track that you are familiar with, and know how it should sound) along with it, then listen to that first before you listen to your track. It doesn't have to be the same genre or anything. Check yo nuts

Re: Mastering Questions That Still Confuse Me

EQ'ing without any kind of spectrum analyzer I'd say is good practice personally. EQing by ear is a lot more beneficiary than trying to do it visually! Generally, don't reduce your master fader. The master bus sums all of the other faders, so you're essentially just squashing the mix which isn't a g...

Re: Do People actually DJ with virtualdj?

I've got a semi-related question, I used to DJ quite a fair bit, but I used strictly vinyl - then children and life etc. not having the room I once used to have, resulted in me having to get rid of my turtables. I would love to get back into DJ'ing but I want to do it properly, I don't want to candy...
