Re: mastering tips for crappy speakers

High Quality hi-fi speakers are difficult enough to mix on.

IN no way, shape or FUCK ALL... should bad speakers be used to master on.

It seems you don't really understand what "mastering" means.....

Re: Acapella extraction techniques needed

There are two choices -

spend a long time trying to extract with mainly poor results...

or, find the acapella.

If you can't find the acapella - you have to ask yourself, do you REALLY need it?

Re: Advice for finishing tracks and not scrapping ideas?

I am a huge fan of cannibalizing tracks that can't stand on their own.... ..BUT I force myself to finish the track, or at least flesh out the idea first. Once I have the main gist of it, if it isn't great, but one element is (ie - some random KILLER hi hat pattern), then I bounce that bit out and us...

Re: Music videos

I think videos are worth it.... preferably something with a bit of narrative, as there have already been enough "abstract for the sake of being abstract" videos out there. The 2 fave videos I had done were: This one, featuring a gritty Panamanian breakin' crew (which I think fits perfectly...

Re: How much to invest in your set up.

I figure over the 14 years that I did electronic / hiphop / sound design.... I probably spent about £10,000 on a desktop and 2 laptops + midi controllers + software + extra bits, etc.... I certainly have earned much more than that sum in the same amount of time from those endeavors - and that isn't ...

Re: How many years of experience? :/

First of all - as mentioned... the 10,000 hours thing is a myth. I can speak first hand, because not only as an artist, but also a teacher the past 8 years... I can tell you that - sure, more hours is better... BUT ONLY IF those are efficient, and productive hours. Most hours people spend on a craft...

Re: Any Good Record Labels? Label chat= Positive comments on

I am not saying there aren't plenty of shady labels out there... ...but it also important to realize that the game has changed in the way people make their money.. and from releases is REALLY not a big part of it for most ANYBODY anymore. I used to get advances from labels - but the scene was changi...

Re: Goldbaby samples...

I have rinsed the hell out of BOTH the free stuff as well as many of the paid sample sets.

It is true Goldbaby has a bit of a narrow parameter (vintage drum machines, run thru tape)... but for what they do, they are the BEST.

I recommend whole heartedly no matter what genre one does.......

Re: Confused over tempo.

Regarding tempo - Anyone who says it has to line up within strict bpm parameters either 1) doesn't know what they are talking about or 2) is a shit DJ. In my sets I often range from 70-180 (plus many non beat-matchable tracks)... and I've been on Sub.FM for almost 5 years now. A good DJ chooses what...

Re: Confused over tempo.

That said - the "Damn Son..." vocal sample is a bit annoying..... ;)

twice per 1:21 is OK as it is assumed it is watermarking....

...but for a full track - no way a DJ wants to hear that every 45 seconds... unless you want you track re-edited.

Re: Confused over tempo.

I like that 160 version... and as much as I like playing shit slower than normal... I wouldn't go any slower than this. I really like it and it works nice. So yeah... just do what you do and stop begging for people's permission. Have a vision and go with it without begging for forgiveness. If you ca...
