Re: The most ridiculous comments regarding music production

i love how you guys get wound up by an actual musician telling you that pissing around on a midi sequencer isnt making real music.

newsflash: its not.

Re: Some really beautiful/sexy production

It's been a shame that in the best part of 3 years now I haven't really had the chance to practice piano as much as I love the instrument, but this is without a doubt the most beautiful piece I've learned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHEpuj96bCg currently learning that myself - amazing piece of ...

Re: Pads - tips and how-to.

pads are all about the chords you play. try stacking the same chord (or inversions of said chord) at various octaves, different parts of said chords coming from different synths/patches (try panning these about), lots of slow modulation, dont be afraid of subtle pitch modulation, whatever really. se...

bitcrushing stuff is a great way to make things sound really fucking cheap and shitty

unless done with care, which it generally isnt

Re: Buying a new audio interface, but I have a few questions

Well, I said fuck it and went out and bought the KONTROL1. I've always been happy with NI products, and I read good things about the sound quality. I also got some midi cables for my keyboard. Might as well run it through the KONTROL. Might help input latency? Now to wait for ze mail to arrive. Any...

Re: Jungle tips?

ah fair play then mate at least you are honest! yeah have a look for 101s break pack or something like that, it has nearly all the classic funk breaks that you hear in jungle/dnb. other than that you will probably be wanting some 808s and the classic reese bass (like the one in terrorist) then go th...

get sampling mate.

on another note its so tiresome seeing people after a sample pack and a specific plugin for anything they havent done before. it screams laziness.

Re: music theory question

it really does make life easier. before i understood much theory, it was difficult trying to get my ideas into the sequencer, and in the process i could well lose it whilst sodding about trying to find the right notes. a knowledge of scales, chords, etc. means you can get your ideas out much quicker...

Re: Dubstep with real instruments?

Is it possible to get proper sub bass power from a bass guitar? I figured that most amps / cabinets for rock music tend to roll off the sub in favour of bringing out more of the second harmonic but maybe thats how they're mixed or setup. i.e. When Pendulum play live they have a bass player but I'm ...

Re: Acoustic treatment.

i think you can create some quite effective bass traps in the form of helmholtz absorbers out of rockwool, roofing felt and some bits of wood. i remember researching into this when i was at uni. lemme find the articles... edit - here we go: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul98/articles/acoustics1.h...

learning to play the piano - slowly, but even so. its an enlightening experience, suddenly theory makes so much more sense - scales, chords, etc. are all sticking in my head.

decided to learn to read music too.

Re: Using tape as an effect

I'm gonna have to disagree here - find a Revox (A77/B77) in decent condition and it won't need very much maintenance at all. They're not that expensive either; I got my B77 for about 200 euros and an A77 is cheaper still. Tape is about a tenner for a small Trident reel, and you only really need one...

drums and bass both sound great after some proper tape saturation. it adds something a bit special to low end.

Re: deep or just boring?

to me deep carries connotations of a level of detail and subtlety, fuck all to do with a sine wave sub and some chords. depth and aggression are not mutually exclusive either - its quite possible to be both. however lots of people seem to refer to anything thats a bit mellow as 'deep', which imo isn...

Re: 'Screamo' Samples/Acapellas?

Soul has nothing to do with Dubstep but how many of us use the Amen Break in out tracks? and in fact dubstep barely has anything to do with dub anymore, other than the fact that it has loads of bass and that it gets played on sound systems. I would say dubstep still has a lot of influence form dub....
