You can always put in a 'utility' and play around with the stereo width of the sound with that.

If you don't 'Dither' when you export your track, and then open the file up in something like Waveburner and bounce from there I think it can give better results. Heard a lot of good reviews about this http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/nectar/. Not had the pleasure of using it myself but iZotope stuff is usually spot on.

Often with percussion I like to play it in and then either manually mess about with the notes or sometimes quantise by a slight percentage to 1/16 or 16/T which usually tightens things up a bit.
