I put together a short video touring the studio, it's about D&B but kind of overlaps with dubstep and other dance genres to a degree, you may find it of interest, tours the studio and has an off the cuff chat about mastering such genres..

Mono vs stereo
The most basic sound design consideration of all ! However this does not stop the confusion that arises from time to time even with somewhat accomplished producers. Fact is unless you have been trained in audio engineering you may have a slightly less than ideal definition. This article will change ...

Re: Monarch Audio Mastering review?
Cannot comment on this company... all I know is that there are plenty of "mastering" places out there that make you raise your eyebrows somewhat. You have to use a bit of common sense and make some basic investigations as to what a mastering engineer has been up to in their professional au...

Re: Expensive Sound?
Engineering experience and the best equipment money can are the requirements. You can normally see (hear?) through "tricks" in direct comparison with actual expensive productions. Familiarization with high quality sound from .wav file sources is an absolute must in the world of mp3/AAC and...

Re: Is most feedback worthless?
Professional technical feedback is definitely worthwhile, especially for those starting out, a few concise and razor sharp pointers can set a new producer off on the right track. Advice based on a linear acoustic and serious large format monitoring regarding a mix tone, balance and stereo image is i...

Re: Compressor differences?
The vast majority of compressors have subtle (and not so subtle) differences. This in part is why learning compression can be quite time consuming and confusing. Most sound slightly different from each other and repeating the effects precisely with another compressor is not a given. I recommend gett...

I can recommend a product called Arctic Silver, it is a very high quality thermal bonding compound and have used it when I built DIY pc's in the past worth having it IMO. cheers

Re: Stereo widening.
That text just confused the shit out of me. :corntard: Is my track mono at the start until I apply panning and/or stereo widening? And what is the difference between mono and stereo devices? (I have a big mono amp) I do not wish to appear condescending but audio engineering is a skill and there is ...

Re: Mastering is not a plug in
I would disagree that mastering isn't artistic. I think in order to produce a good master, the engineer needs to know what's important and what character to emphasize. Mastering engineers just work on a more abstract level, assessing the sonic feel of a track instead of individual concrete elements...

Re: Mastering is not a plug in
I am not here for the "sell" of mastering by the way (as far as I know about 0.1pct of my work comes from here lol) I just want people to understand and have some clarity more than anything. The internet is full of bull and cloudy explanations, vague looking bedroom studios etc. That way y...

Re: Mastering is not a plug in
A bit unrelated but this is something I've always wondered; why doesn't the mixing engineer just master the song also? Like why is it even a separate thing and not just a part of the mixing process? Very much related.... 1) Lack of objectivity / fresh ears 2) Compounding issues due to same room and...

Re: Mastering is not a plug in
Analogue gear does make a BIG-ASS difference like mentioned. More so when chosen judiciously. Analogue equipment is not all built the same. It remains secondary to actual processing choices. i.e. correct eqing, compression etc. etc. And that comes down to monitoring again... budget KRK's will not c...

Re: Mastering is not a plug in
You can self finalize a track but not really master it yourself. The premise of mastering means objectivity which is impossible to gain DIY. (and that of a professional is additionally valuable) Ultimately we know quite a few people self finalize as not everyones music is suitable, competent enough ...
