Re: Do you mix witg a mastering chain?

I mix into a master bus compressor maybe 60% of the time. the other 40, its gets tried, but just doesn't work for the track. Quite often try some master bus EQ when a mix is feeling about 1/2 done-- go back, listen to reference stuff, and see how my overall spectrum is doing. Never really enjoyed mi...

Re: Mixing in the Analog World

Curious what anyone thinks of the following mad thoughts: I've been regretting not having any sub groups/mixes on my new mixer, specifically I'd like to be able to bus process my drums while maintaining individual control of the sounds. I could do that in Maschine...and I do to an extent...but who ...

Re: Live/Hardware dubstep

^ it's not my cup of tea but tbf... most teens in bands are probably still sorting out how to play Rush covers, the same that they were 20 years ago. Yes, they've got a rented sound stage and ton of gear, lots of it expensive (laptops, Nords and in-ears/transmitters don't grow on trees), so i'm sure...

none. very standard way of making things work.

mono is more powerful than stereo, you sound amped on the process, so go for it! enjoy and report back about how it goes.

Re: Mackie Big Knob?

I've had mine for about 5 years (?) now... it is definitely, absolutely 100% NOT transparent in audio, but it's also cheap as hell and the coloration is a handicap you can work with. besides being literally a big knob you (or a client) can turn to make everything louder or quieter, it's great for pa...

Re: Live/Hardware dubstep

like anything else in music it comes down to taste and execution. bad taste and mediocre execution makes for a not-very-good live set.

dismissing the idea outright, though, is just as ill-informed.

Re: Mixing down, bass taking up the spectrum.

^ Seriously. mixing down a tune with alot of big, exciting sounds is akin to invading a small nation. If you send in the tanks and bombers and infantry, you've started off well. If you deploy 10,000 rabbits weilding scalpels... not so much. (multi-band sidechaining/ .5 db cuts near 200hz that approx...

https://soundcloud.com/freakyloops/fa011-discostep-sample-pack And that would be the worst thing i've heard so far this month. Can we not infect disco with hi-fivin' no-sleeves fratboy modulated basses and distorted square-wave risers? please? OTOH, there's plenty of disco-friendly samples in most ...

for a non cart-before-the-horse answer:

mix those bits louder than the rest of the elements.

sometimes it really is just that easy.

write more, mix more, mix other people's music--and have to make recalls, mix radically different styles of music-- and you'll change your mind.

Really? You think the quality of a Motu will be apparent on a sub-rokit monitor? yep. shit in, shit out. would much rather mix on something like alesis monitor one's via a dependable MOTU than some extremely high-end speaker w/.. whatever. at least that way i know what's going IN to the speaker is ...

having owned interfaces from m-audio, tascam, MOTU, and metric halo-- if $s are a concern, get an apogee one or one of the NI boxes. personally i'd say spend more $ on your interface and less on the speakers. even just getting a used motu ultralite will blow any of the cheapies out of the water in te...

sampling is one of those things that plugins do infinitely better than a dedicated unit. even the exs24 or ableton's sampler blows any hardware unit i've ever worked with out of the water.

Re: Which ref monitors most easily get you closest to end so

really don't trust the cans at all and am constantly overcompensating for perceived or speculative issues that I can't even hear when I'm using them. listen to more reference tracks, more often, when you're mixing. Everything in a mix is relative-- to the elements inside the mix, and then the whole...
