Re: Night Slugs Club Constructions - manifesto

this is good. "manifesto" is a bit of a tortured word. goals and guidelines make for better music, 100% of the time. Every single college freshman with a 2-4am slot on college radio (including myself) wanted to do a show that was GENRE-FREE and CUTTING EDGE and etc, etc, etc. and every single one of...

Re: Started job in professional studio, advice needed please

I"ve had great and i've had terrible interns in sessions. The great ones are pro-active, don't get in the way, and generally add a whole lot to keeping a session moving... and when the client is paying by the hour, keeping a session moving is key. Initaitve-wise i've had interns do things like set u...

Re: Can anyone recommend a good MIDI keyboard?

I bought the arturia keylab last month and it is, hands down, the best controller i've ever owned (and i've owned alot). the synths are extremely tasty as well.

in the states the 25 key one is about $200-- a steal when you consider the POS axioms cost around the same.

Re: Alesis Monitor 1 Active MKII Powered Monitors

they're probably more accurate and easier to work on than 50% of the stuff out there that costs twice as much. They aren't amazing, they won't make you love the music, you'll have to work for your midrange but overall-- decent tools.

and CHEAP!

you wouldn't--but ableton defaults to putting in warp markers in recorded material. Ergo...

Re: Ableton used as multi track recorder and editing system?

ableton's perfectly fine as a recorder. It's not my ideal-- the whole warping thing means that weird, unintended edits can happen very easily- but those mistakes can be avoided and fixed. I just get aggy that they happen at all ;) ProTools is stil the go-to audio recording system, but really logic/c...

Re: Compressor as an EQ

If I did I'd be sure to label it Attack Speed not Time and have "Fast" and "Slow" written at the extremes of the range. Might still do that but have fast on the left and slow on the right just so it's still intuitive to people who are used to time based controls. You use a VST host Sharm? logic and...

Re: Compressor as an EQ

Compressors like the 1176 where you're adjusting attack speed instead of time are actually more accurate to what's actually going on. Even though everyone complains "the knobs are wired backwards!" literally kept me up at nights. "MAYBE I JUST DON'T GET IT!?!?!?!" please don't do that on a pl...

Re: Compressor as an EQ

Oh - it's neat little trick to judge a compressors ability on how the attack behaves. Because the threshold often times introduce a shift in phase or ofcourse tone. Try to find a sound that has a percussive weight to it but mostly consists of high frequency content, like not a snare but a maybe a g...

Re: Compressor as an EQ

Do you eq after? Like subtract before, and add after the comp? on most things, unless there's a lot of low-end junk that needs to be filtered out or the compressor's gonna act all crazy, I try to do whatever EQ'ing after compressing. depends on the source material though-- If i have something to mi...

Re: Compressor as an EQ

in hardware land, the distressor, the api buss comp and the smart C2 all have internal sidechains that can let you bypass low-end info so that the lows stay big, and the rest gets compressed. really handy on bass guitar, kick, etc. neve 33609 might have this as well, can never remember and don't run...

Re: Mixdown problems

Orban 6228 hah-- that's the same ones i have (though i think it's 622B, not 6228... stupid font regardless). it's an odd eq, a bit noisy, but actually IS good at adding the magic that isn't there. definitely not a "responsible" EQ but i don't have any plugs that do what it does. totally 100% a good...

Re: Mixdown problems

@Sj- re: the high-end boost,i have no idea dB-wise. it's generally both "nice" and "sweet." if something goes into it already sounding good, it'll come out with a bit of sheen on it. Definitely can help background vocals stand up to a super-bright lead vocal. It won't be the thing that saves a poorl...

In regards to Fabfilter, were you referring to Saturn, rather than Volcano? yep probably. I have the suite, i only wind up using the pro-Q and "the other one," which is the distortion one. Can't remember unless it's in front of me. doh yep airwindows is mac only. in fact i think it's audio units on...

Re: Mixdown problems

Beyond eq - I took a year off, and kind of forgot how to add vibe to sounds. Think I used to use a preamp emulation and an 1176 clone. What's the best way to add edge and clarity to sounds, hopefully with (actually, and really) shaving a few db's off of peaks? What device/chain do you use? Looking ...

Re: Mixdown problems

Compress for the loss in harmonics? Why not just a little boost somewhere pleasant in the sound? Why not just turn it up a half -db? Why compress? at the track level, if i'm looking for more harmonics i'm more likely to reach for an 1176 or la3a emulation (or just use the distressor) rather than eq...

Re: Making sound "sound" sampled?

it depends on the instrument that you're talking about. actually re-amping and re-recording stuff makes a huge difference. was trying to re-create a 70s, blown-out bollywood sound on a tune a few years ago... recorded the vocals in the hallway (rather than the vocal booth), clipping the pre on the w...
